A classic platformer from the original PlayStation is making a comeback on modern consoles, with developer Argonaut Games bringing back Croc 2: Kingdom of the Gobbos. The rerelease of the PS1 Croc sequel is set to officially launch later in 2026.

The original PlayStation was home to a wealth of classic platformers, helping to popularize the genre’s transition to 3D. Games like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon have gone down as some of the most beloved titles in gaming history, with each spawning wildly successful franchises. The PlayStation library also included plenty of mascot platformers beyond its biggest games, with lesser-known games like Croc, Gex, and Klonoa becoming cult classics among fans of the console. Now, a popular platformer sequel is being brought to modern consoles in the near future.

Croc 2 is Getting a Remaster from Argonaut Games

Developer and publisher Argonaut Games is bringing back Croc 2 with a remaster on modern consoles. The official reveal trailer for the Croc 2 remaster teases revamped graphics and improved controls, while retaining the core gameplay of the original version. The follow-up to 2025’s Croc remaster will also include a variety of bonus content from the game’s development, such as design drafts and interviews with the developers. Croc 2: Kingdom of the Gobbos is scheduled to officially debut in Q4 2026 with fans able to add it to their wishlist now, though a hard release date has not been confirmed by Argonaut Games.

The remaster of Croc 2 comes as a follow-up to a previous remaster of the original game from Argonaut. The company partnered with Titanium Games in 2025 to launch an enhanced version of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, featuring similarly overhauled graphics and improved control schemes. The Croc remaster from Argonaut also featured a similar Crocipedia to the Croc 2 remaster, filled with concept art and design drafts from the original game. The Platinum Edition of the game, released in October 2025, also implemented a time trial mode in Croc, alongside new achievements and more content being introduced to the Crocipedia.

While Argonaut Games is not the most prolific studio in the game industry, the company has a wide array of different games in its library. Argonaut developed a variety of licensed video games throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, including beloved properties like Harry Potter, Scooby-Doo, and The Emperor’s New Groove. Argonaut notably worked with Nintendo to develop the Super FX chip used in several 3D Super Nintendo games, even helping to co-develop the original Star Fox and Star Fox 2. The studio originally closed in 2007 before being re-opened in 2024 as a way to remaster its older games.

Recent years have seen a massive resurgence of classic games from the Nintendo 64 and PS1 era. Smaller developers have brought back plenty of platformers from the early days of 3D gaming, including games like Glover and Gex. Nintendo has also been capitalizing on the nostalgia for the fifth generation, not only releasing a remake of the original Star Fox but confirming a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for 2026. Fans of early 3D platformers have had plenty to enjoy throughout recent years, and the trend shows no signs of stopping.
