Controversial PlayStation Dynamic Pricing Seems to Be In Effect for Spring Sale

Sony appears to be quietly continuing to test its controversial new dynamic pricing system for PlayStation users, as the 2026 Spring sale is displaying some drastically different prices for shoppers. The PlayStation Spring sale kicked off earlier this week and will remain live until April 22, but those looking to pick up some epic deals that they’ve seen online may want to proceed with caution, as some users are seeing much deeper discounts on AAA titles.

It’s no secret that the cost of video game development continues to skyrocket, with the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 likely set to be the most expensive title ever developed, and these costs are then passed down to the consumer. The launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S marked a major shift in the industry, with the traditional cost of AAA games increasing their price point from $60 to $70. Now, six years later, there are even talks of an $80 price tag for premium titles like Grand Theft Auto 6. With the cost of living also rising, it’s only natural that many gamers are waiting for their favorite titles to go on sale before picking them up.

PlayStation Users Are Seeing Different Prices in the 2026 Spring Sale

With Spring officially upon us, gamers are looking for some of the best deals around, but PlayStation is making things much more difficult this year. Earlier this month, rumors that Sony was testing a dynamic pricing system for some AAA games on the PlayStation Store began to spread, and now it seems to be practically undeniable. Shortly after the Spring sale kicked off this week, many users began to notice that discounts on certain titles, such as the critically acclaimed Astro Bot, differed for them. One user received a discount of 55%, taking the price down from $59.99 to just $26.99, but others had only received a 34% deduction, meaning the price of Astro Bot was $39.59.

The same user then followed up with another post, revealing they had received a massive discount of 70% for Stellar Blade, while others were only seeing a 43% discount. As expected, the response to this dynamic pricing change hasn’t gone down well with fans. One user even responded by saying it should be “illegal” due to players receiving the exact same product. As for how the system decides who should receive a deeper discount than others, it remains a mystery. “Does it look at how much we spend in general? Does it look at if we have the discounted games in our wishlist?” one user questioned.

This is just the latest round of changes being made to the PlayStation Store, as Sony recently implemented a new feature that allows players to see the launch price of certain titles before they purchase them. Both the web and console versions of the PlayStation Store now display this information, but only for select games, which currently include Battlefield 6, EA Sports UFC 5, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and more. With new sales occurring regularly, such a feature allows players to see how deep a discount really is and offers more insight into their purchase. However, the continued testing of dynamic pricing now has PlayStation users feeling like this is one step forward and two steps back.

With that being said, there are still tons to look forward to if you’re a PlayStation 5 owner, as 2026 is stacked with some massive releases. We’ve already seen the likes of Resident Evil Requiem and Crimson Desert dominate the first half of the year, but there’s still plenty more to come. PlayStation 5 exclusive Saros is now just a few weeks away, and Sony isn’t going to make fans wait long for another console exclusive, as the highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine recently set its release date for September 16, 2026.
