Crimson Desert Dev Comments on Multiplayer and Sequel Plans

Crimson Desert developer Pearl Abyss stated that the company considered the potential for its latest game to receive a multiplayer expansion and a potential sequel in the future. Crimson Desert was released on March 19 after going gold two months ahead of its launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Crimson Desert is an ambitious open-world RPG that has continued to receive support from Pearl Abyss via free content patches. While some of these updates have fixed some of Crimson Desert‘s more frustrating bugs, the content patches have also included new ways that players can interact with the world of Pywel. Pearl Abyss previously stated during Summer Game Fest that Crimson Desert had plans to launch its first DLC expansion, though the studio did not elaborate further at the time.

Pearl Abyss releases a major update for Crimson Desert, continuing to address issues while also overhauling the game’s economy and trading posts.

Pearl Abyss Discusses Crimson Desert’s Future Plans

Crimson Desert will continue to receive free updates as needed, and Pearl Abyss offered a glimpse at the game’s future in general. According to Pearl Abyss’ Q2 26 earnings letter, the South Korea-based development team stated that it was preparing ways to expand Crimson Desert to new audiences. Pearl Abyss confirmed that plans concerning Crimson Desert‘s first DLC would be revealed during the ongoing third quarter, which ends on September 30. Pearl Abyss then noted that the plans concerning the total amount of DLC content had not been finalized. Pearl Abyss said that Crimson Desert was not just a one-off RPG, but rather a flagship series that could be used for the studio’s long-term plans.

The Crimson Desert development team also stated that the hit RPG has potential for a sizable multiplayer expansion. However, Pearl Abyss clarified that integrating multiplayer into Crimson Desert would be a tricky endeavor from a technical standpoint. Though Crimson Desert has added new features via its content patches, it remains to be seen if and how a potential multiplayer mode will be implemented. Fans hoping for a mobile port of Crimson Desert are out of luck, as Pearl Abyss said the company had no plans to release a mobile version anytime soon. Pearl Abyss stated that it was continuing research into optimizing the BlackSpace Engine for mobile platforms.

Pearl Abyss also touched upon the ongoing development of Crimson Desert‘s Switch 2 port. Pearl Abyss stated that the game was in a playable state at a foundational level, though some further optimization and evaluation still needed to be done to comply with the company’s standards. Pearl Abyss said that it was targeting the first half of 2027 as a possible launch window for Crimson Desert on Switch 2. The studio said that more information would be shared once the details were ironed out.
