Dark Arisen Is Days Away From Fixing the Open-World RPG’s Biggest Self-Inflicted Problem

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is set to give Capcom’s open-world fantasy RPG a new lease on life, with passionate fan feedback being the main reason why this expansion was greenlit in the first place. The original launch state of Dragon’s Dogma 2 wasn’t bad by any means, but it also wasn’t the stellar fantasy experience that many had hoped for. Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is intended to be more than just a run-of-the-mill expansion. Capcom wants to right the wrongs that frustrated players so much, and Dark Arisen will hopefully be the fix that gives players the game they had expected from the beginning.

Games like Cyberpunk 2077 have demonstrated how a good post-launch expansion can really breathe new life into a game, and Capcom is banking on that same kind of success. Now that Dark Arisen is right around the corner, only time will tell if Dragon’s Dogma 2 is able to have that kind of comeback, but the promise of glaring in-game issues being fixed is exciting. Dragon’s Dogma 2 could have been much more well-received at launch if Capcom had considered these upcoming features during the original development cycle, though.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Has the Perfect Endgame Fix, But Barely Uses It

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings tons of new content, but it misses out big on fixing the RPG’s underutilized endgame area.

One of Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s defining characteristics is its love of friction. That definitely isn’t a bad thing. Control Resonant‘s level design is a solid example of how “frustrating” traversal and navigation can actually add deeper layers to the overall experience. Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s special version of friction-heavy world design missed the mark, though.

It wasn’t necessarily because of the traversal alone, though. Exploring Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s map has been branded as tedious and annoying, and that’s mostly true. However, this frustration is found more in the lack of dynamic and interesting encounters instead of the travel itself. Producer Naoto Oyama revealed in an interview with GamesRadar a few months ago that Capcom quickly got to work on Dark Arisen once fans had voiced plenty of opinions about what works within the game and what doesn’t.

We started the project during the period where, after the release of the base game, we received incredibly passionate feedback from our players who expressed a desire to play more and continue exploring.

One of the key takeaways that Capcom got from fan critiques of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is that the game needs to be more accessible, hence the addition of permanent fast travel in the 3.1 update that arrived over the summer. Optional features that make games more accessible are great, but Capcom also runs the risk of overcorrecting itself.

After the Marvel’s Wolverine scent trail controversy and the various in-game markers that show players where to go, whether developers should add gameplay features that make games too easy has been a hot debate topic for the past few weeks. Granted, things like Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s Eternal Ferrystone don’t have to be utilized if players don’t want to. However, if it turns out that Dark Arisen is mostly focused on easing the game’s friction instead of making that friction more worth the hassle, then Capcom will have missed the point entirely.

Dark Arisen Needs to Make the Struggle of Dragon’s Dogma 2 More Rewarding Instead of Side-Stepping It Entirely

One of the biggest problems with Dragons Dogma 2‘s design is that after traveling back and forth over and over, everything eventually gets repetitive. It’s totally fine if players want to use the Eternal Ferrystone for fast travel, but such an item wouldn’t have even been necessary in the first place if Dragon’s Dogma 2 had more dynamic and engaging enemies and loot when going from Point A to Point B. Some of Dragon’s Dogma 2 enemies become predictable and feel more like a chore after a while, and the deeper cave exploration often offers lackluster gear that doesn’t really make the effort seem worth it.

Norgan and the Lost Rites Dungeons Can Bring the Rewarding Challenge That Dragon’s Dogma 2 Needs

  • Norgan is the new map area being added in Dark Arisen.
  • The region is a harsh, vertical landscape with dangerously cold weather and new enemies.
  • Norgan also features a new story arc that lasts around 15–20 hours.
  • There are 12 new explorable areas called Lost Rites dungeons that are found across the map.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Just Made Its Lack of New Vocations Make a Lot More Sense

Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s Norgan region is hopefully bringing enough new enemies to the table that it shakes up the tedium of defeating the same small-level antagonists repeatedly. The Lost Rites dungeons might not fix the game’s Point A to Point B problem, but the added challenges and leveling potential makes them a promising addition. There have been a few solid Dragon’s Dogma 2 improvements leading up to Dark Arisen’s launch, and it will be fascinating to see if this expansion turns out to be the comeback that the game deserves.
