The 2016 remaster of the original Darksiders video game is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S this year. First released in 2010 by publisher THQ and developer Vigil Games, Darksiders was a hack-and-slash action game drawing inspiration from popular franchises like Devil May Cry and God of War. The game centered around the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with this initial entry placing players in the role of The Horseman of War. The game proved to be a solid success story for THQ, enough that it received a sequel, Darksiders 2, in 2012, just before THQ’s closure.
The franchise was later acquired by Nordic Games, which also acquired the THQ trademark and renamed itself THQ Nordic. It received a remaster, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, in 2016, just a year after a similar re-release of its sequel, Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition. These re-releases did well enough that THQ Nordic was able to continue the series, releasing the long-awaited Darksiders 3 in 2018. The series also received a spinoff prequel, Darksiders Genesis, in 2019, and a fourth major entry is on the way.
Darksiders 4’s Freedom of Choice Could Be a Double-Edged Sword
Darksiders 4 will give players the choice they’ve been waiting for since the first game, but this ambitious plan could have far-reaching consequences.
Darksiders: Warmastered Edition Coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 19
THQ Nordic has revealed that Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will be ported to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The publisher has also released a new trailer for this port to celebrate its official announcement. This re-released version of the game will launch on May 19 and will retail at $29.99. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S re-releases of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will also be available in both physical and digital versions.
Further details on what this next-generation edition of the game will offer have been minimal. Most notably, the game will run at native 4K resolution and a “stable” 60 FPS on the PlayStation 5, while the Xbox Series X/S versions will likely feature similar graphical upgrades. This version will also feature support for the DualSense controller and the Activities Cards features on PlayStation 5. No word has been given on whether this version will feature an upgrade path from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5, as the previous PlayStation 5 re-release of Darksiders 2 did.
Darksiders getting another re-release on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S is certainly an interesting choice, considering that this is now the third console generation the game has been released on. The release of a new purchasable version of the game draws comparisons to titles like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto 5, both of which received re-releases across several new consoles. Unlike those titles, Darksiders at least has sequels available now, but it’s fascinating to see this title continue to see new ports today. What’s more, the trailer for this new version indicates this will be a fairly barebones port that doesn’t seem primed to showcase the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S technology in a meaningful way.
Perhaps the biggest reason this new edition of the original Darksiders game exists is to draw excitement for the upcoming Darksiders 4. The next title in the franchise was first teased during a THQ Nordic Showcase in 2024, and the publisher confirmed that the new game would be the franchise’s fourth mainline entry in 2025. While the publisher has gone radio silent on its announcement since then, THQ Nordic’s parent company Embracer Group revealed in February that it would release a “long-awaited, major, in-house developed and in-house published title” within the fiscal year. Perhaps Darksiders’ next-gen re-release is merely an appetizer until THQ Nordic is ready to unleash the long-awaited Darksiders 4.
