Dataminers Have Figured Out What the Fallout Countdown Clock is Counting Down To, and It’s Not What You Think

A recent datamine has confirmed that the timer on Fallout Season 2’s website is just counting down to a new virtual location to explore. The clock has captured the attention of many fans excited for new game news after the Amazon show injected new life into the franchise, but it seems they may be in for disappointment. When the Fallout clock finally hits zero later this week, it won’t end in any groundbreaking game announcements.

It’s been years since Bethesda has released any new Fallout games, but the series has seen a massive boost in popularity lately. After Season 2 of the show premiered, Fallout became the highest-rated live-action adaptation of any video game franchise, even beating out the critically acclaimed The Last of Us HBO show. All this hype around the TV series has driven people back to the source material and presented the perfect backdrop to drop a bomb about a new game or remake, but unfortunately, it seems that those hopes were nothing more than wishful thinking.

How The Franchise Has Grown Since Fallout: New Vegas Released

Fallout: New Vegas hit the scene 15 years ago, and since then, the entire Fallout franchise has gone through big transformations.

The Fallout Countdown Timer is For the 3D Location Explorer, Not a New Game

Fans had noticed a countdown timer on Fallout‘s Season 2 website in early January, but a Redditor by the name of clintgh has now shared that the countdown is for a new area on the site’s 3D location explorer, not a remake announcement like many had hoped. A picture of files clintgh pulled from the site’s metadata shows a tower icon with the name “Location 4” where there’s currently the clock and an image of a padlock. According to the user, the metadata also shows that this location will be called “The Penthouse” upon reveal and gives fans a 3D mockup of Mr. House’s penthouse to explore, as they can with other show locations on the website.

The reveal may not come as a surprise. As many users in the comments of clintgh’s post pointed out, the Fallout website in question is run by Amazon, which only produces the show and, beyond that licensing agreement, has nothing to do with the games within the franchise. Famed insider Jez Corden has also already stated that the Fallout countdown timer is not related to the games and that the rumored Fallout 3 and New Vegas remakes are not as close to release as some fans had hoped. Still, given how Season 2 brings New Vegas to the show and how long it’s been since Bethesda has made a new Fallout game, some were still hopeful an announcement was on the way, so these findings may still sting a little.

While there may be disappointment in store when the timer ends this Wednesday with the Fallout Season 2 finale, there’s still plenty for fans of the game to look forward to. Multiple insiders and leakers have confirmed that remakes of fan-favorite titles are in the works, even if they won’t be announced once the countdown reaches zero. Even Todd Howard has teased the Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters, saying Bethesda is “working on a whole bunch of stuff” and look forward to revealing them in the future.

For now, it’s unclear when the older Fallout games may get new versions, but it could be a while. Several of the signs fans had theorized could be about game announcements have turned out to be something else, and Bethesda may have its hands full with The Elder Scrolls 6. It’s also likely Fallout 5 won’t come out this decade, but there will be at least one more season of the show, and the rumored remakes could come out before the 2030s, but fans will just have to wait and see to know for sure.
