Dead by Daylight: Best Builds for The Ghost Face

Dead by Daylight‘s Killers roster comes stacked with horror’s most iconic murderers, and Ghost Face ranks right up there with the most iconic. Introduced all the way back in 2019, Danny Johnson’s popularity comes in waves, typically rising around the release of a new Scream movie. While he isn’t necessarily S-Tier, Ghost Face can be absolutely incredible with the right build and strategy, but you need to pick perks that accommodate his fairly slow speed.

Whether somebody is a beginner who has just bought Ghost Face, or a veteran looking to experiment with other Killers, a bit of guidance could go a long way. This article provides a beginner’s guide that focuses only on Ghost Face’s perks and General Perks, along with the best build that covers everything.

Has The Ghost Face Undergone Any Changes In 2026?

Dead by Daylight underwent major changes in 2026, with Behaviour Interactive introducing/altering two mechanisms in a way that greatly impacts most Killers. Firstly, DBD‘s 9.6.0 update altered modifier stacking, introducing a diminishing returns system. If a build revolves around Powers, Items, Perks, and Offerings that give the same benefits, they will no longer stack completely, with each new one having less of an impact. The 2nd modifier is only 50% effective, the third is only 25%, the fourth is only 12.5%, etc.

The second big change is that a Killer’s identity remains hidden until they are spotted/revealed for the first time. This one arguably impacts Ghost Face more than the stacking switch due to his status as a stealth Killer who benefits greatly from catching Survivors off-guard.

Beyond these widespread changes, DBD also changed Danny in two ways, improving his overall functionality.

• Ghost Face’s Night Shroud now has a cooldown period of 15 seconds, rather than the previous 17 seconds.
• The Walleye’s Matchbook add-on was nerfed slightly, as it now decreases Night Shroud’s cooldown by just 2 seconds rather than 3.
• Ultimately, Ghost Face came out on top.
• Patch 10.1.0 had some bug fixes for Ghost Face.

The Ghost Face: Best Beginner Build

Getting Into The Chase

Without a great range of powerful base perks, The Ghost Face can be a little intimidating for newer players. Luckily, The Ghost Face comes with useful information perks like Thrilling Tremors, which allows him to see progressed generators from afar, and I’m All Ears, which is an excellent chase perk. This build concentrates on pressuring these generators and chasing Survivors from them while not letting them recover. A few alternatives are also provided.

• Thrilling Tremors (The Ghost Face) – After picking up a Survivor, all generators not being repaired by Survivors are blocked by the Entity for a certain period. This effect has a cooldown.
• I’m All Ears (The Ghost Face) – Every 40 seconds, when a Survivor fast vaults within the killer’s vicinity, you see their aura for a brief period.
• Hex: No One Escapes Death (General Perk) – After the final generator is completed, all Survivors suffer from the Exposed status ailment, and the killer gains the Haste effect until the Hex Totem is cleansed.
• Spies from the Shadows (General Perk) – While in Night Shroud, crow notifications within 36m give a visual radar ping so you can stalk Survivors before they see you coming.
• Alternative 1: Sloppy Butcher (General Perk) – Applies Mangled and Hemorrhage for 90 seconds on basic uncloak hits, and forces slow healing that gives you more time to stalk returning Survivors. If you want to give this perk a go, the best one to remove would be I’m All Ears.
• Alternative 2: Bitter Murmur (General Perk) – If Ghost Face is within 16 meters of a Generator when it is completed, he sees the Auras of all Survivors for 5 seconds. Once all the Generators are completed, he sees the Auras for 10 seconds. Add this perk instead of Hex: No One Escapes Death.
• Alternative 3: Furtive Chase (The Ghost Face) – When you hook your obsession, you become Undetectable and gain 5% Haste for 18 seconds. Replace Thrilling Tremors.

Making Up For Danny’s Weaknesses

The Ghost Face doesn’t have the best mobility to close the distance on Survivors quickly. He also lacks any innate slowdown in his kit, which makes aura-reading and generator regression perks a must in his best builds.

Opting for Lethal Pursuer to quickly find a few Survivors that can be marked to 99% is ideal. While Nowhere To Hide and Pop Goes The Weasel synergize better with high mobility killers, the Ghost Face greatly benefits from the aura-reading the former provides, which will be further buffed by Lethal Pursuer. Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance is a safe and reliable option for the final perk slot to have consistent pressure on the map.

Discordance and A Nurse’s Calling also provide aura-based information, letting Ghost Face generally know where most Survivors are.

• Lethal Pursuer (The Nemesis) – At the start of the trial, the 3 generators furthest from the killer’s starting location are blocked for an extended duration or until the first survivor is downed.
• Discordance (The Legion) – If 2+ Survivors begin to repair a Generator within 128 meters of Ghost Face, its Aura is revealed via a noise notification. Once Ghost Face moves out of range or one Survivor leaves, the Aura will disappear after 4 seconds.
• A Nurse’s Calling (The Nurse) – If a Survivor is being healed (or healing) within 28 meters of Ghost Face, their Aura will be revealed.
• Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance (The Artist) – The Killer starts with four tokens. For each different Survivor hooked on a white Scourge Hook, they lose one token and explode the generator with the most progress, causing it to lose massive progress.
• Alternative 1: Grim Embrace (The Artist) – On larger maps where you might find yourself losing Generators too quickly, you might want to swap Discordance or Nurse’s Calling for Grim Embrace, just to get a passive block. Hook a Survivor to earn a Token that activates once Ghost Face moves 16 meters away. Up to 3 Tokens block Generators for 10 seconds. At 4 Tokens, that expands to 40 seconds, and you see the Aura of the Obsession for 6 seconds.
• Alternative 2: No Holds Barred (General Perk) – Similar to the above, replaces either Discordance or Nurse’s Calling. When a Generator is completed, the Entity blocks the next Generator with the most progression for 25 seconds, and its Aura is revealed to Ghost Face.

The Ghost Face: Best Add-Ons

For players looking to strengthen The Ghost Face’s Night Shroud power, various add-ons can help. Enhancing different aspects of his abilities, this Best Add-Ons section details the strongest Add-Ons to use on The Ghost Face — in order of rarity on the Bloodweb.

“Philly”

Despite being a Common Add-On, “Philly” is among The Ghost Face’s most consistently impactful. This Night Shroud Add-On reduces the time it takes to Mark a Survivor by 10%, meaning you can more quickly Expose Survivors as you stalk them, wasting less time and making you less likely to be Revealed in the act.

Walleye’s Matchbook

An uncomplicated Ghost Face Add-On, the Walleye’s Matchbook, reduces the recovery cooldown on Night Shroud by 2 seconds, allowing you to reenter your power a little sooner after it ends. The default Night Shroud cooldown lasts 15 seconds.

Olsen’s Address Book

Olsen’s Address Book is a pretty decent Uncommon rarity add-on considering the effect it provides. A full five seconds of wall hacks when chasing a Marked Survivor can be a game-changer in getting downs and maintaining the tempo of the game. It also synergizes very well with Lethal Pursuer, which is part of the Ghost Face’s best build.

Olsen’s Wallet

To get back into Night Shroud faster, Olsen’s Wallet may be more appealing than Walleye’s Matchbook. This Rare Add-On immediately recharges The Ghost Face’s power upon breaking a pallet or wall, giving you more opportunities to Mark Survivors mid-chase.

Drop-Leg Knife Sheath

Another one of The Ghost Face’s most powerful Add-Ons, the Drop-Leg Knife Sheath gives the Killer a 10% Haste effect for 5 seconds after Marking a Survivor. Complimenting perks like The Shape’s Play with Your Food, this add-on gives Survivors less time to react before you can land a hit.

Driver’s License

When generators are getting finished too fast, The Ghost Face’s Driver’s License explodes generators being worked on by Survivors who are being marked and blocks them for 15 seconds. This tremendous buff forcefully slows down the game, and it works well with other regression perks like Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance and Pop Goes The Weasel.

Outdoor Security Camera

If finding Survivors isn’t your specialty, the Outdoor Security Camera can help supplement these skills by revealing all Survivors’ auras for 7 seconds after you down a Marked Survivor. This ability allows you to better assess what generators are being worked on and where you need to apply pressure. It also helps avoid flashlights and pallet saves from nearby Survivors, and it can assist in snowballing the game in your favor.

Night Vision Monocular

In 2026, Dead by Daylight increased the importance of a Killer remaining hidden in the early game, as Survivors will not know their identity until they expose them for the first time. This very rare add-on ensures that Ghost Face’s reveal comes with consequences for the Survivor, as they will be Exhausted for 10 seconds. Consequently, they won’t be able to use distance-closing perks like Lithe or Sprint Burst.

How To Unlock Daniel Johnson/The Ghost Face In Dead By Daylight

As is the case with all Dead by Daylight‘s licensed characters, Ghost Face is not readily available as one of the free characters in any version of the game. Therefore, if you want to play as Danny, you will need to spend extra money to unlock them. Now, compared to other DLC packages, Chapter 12: Ghost Face is a bit different, as the package does not include a Survivor. To date, only this chapter and Chapter 30: Chucky have launched with just a Killer, and the price reflects that.

So, how do you unlock Ghost Face? Well, you just have to purchase Chapter 12, which costs 500 Auric Cells (or $4.99) on both PC and consoles. As a licensed character, he cannot be unlocked using Iridescent Shards, nor is he part of any bundle. Ghost Face is also not included in Dead by Daylight: Gold Edition​​​​​.

Is The Ghost Face A Good Dead By Daylight Killer For Beginners?

Dead by Daylight has so many Killers at this point that any (relative) newcomers looking to pick their first will be frankly spoiled for choice. On paper, too many options should be a great thing, as it ensures there will be somebody to suit everyone’s fancy. However, unless you are just looking to purchase the majority of the roster, most beginners will likely either stick to free characters or settle for a handful of DLC Killers. Should Danny be one of your first purchases if you are trying to get into Dead by Daylight?

Honestly, every Killer is technically viable for newcomers. Sure, you will need to spend way more time mastering complex Killers like The Nurse or The Hillbilly than beginner-friendly characters like The Wraith or Albert Wesker, but the journey can be a lot more fun if you jump headfirst into the former. The pay-off is also great in both of those cases, particularly The Nurse.

The Ghost Face is a bit of a strange case, as he is a relatively straightforward Killer who relies on stealth and uses his standard melee strike to deal damage. His fundamentals and builds do not sound all that complex in theory, but he is surprisingly difficult to use effectively. He is not a great chaser, as his core method revolves around stalking Survivors. This type of gameplay generally requires players to be fairly familiar with not only a map’s layout, but also traditional Survivor builds so that they can accurately predict their actions. Consequently, Danny is not great for beginners, even though he is a relatively simple Killer.

Is The Ghost Face A Good Killer To Main In 2026?

Now that we have discussed whether Ghost Face is accessible for beginners, we have to answer the most important question: Should anybody bother using him?

On February 27, 2026, Scream 7 hit theaters, which sparked a rise in popularity for Danny in Dead by Daylight. The game didn’t really take advantage of the film’s release by updating the character in any way, so Ghost Face steadily returned to his average. Currently, he is just out of the top 10 most used Killers, which is by no means a bad spot to be in. In fact, this ranking reflects Ghost Face’s 2026 status: He is viable, but he is not the meta Killer.

In low-level matches where the goal is just to unleash a few jumpscaes, Ghost Face works well, as he punishes Survivors with poor situational awareness or teamwork. In competitive, high-level games, Danny can hit the mark, as long as he is in the hands of a skillful player who knows exactly what to do. Even then, there are better options.

Ghost Face Is An M1 Killer

M1 Killers are characters who rely on their basic attack to take out Survivors, with their special ability being secondary. While these Killers can be used effectively in the right hands, they simply have a more limited toolset at their disposal, making them far easier to counter or avoid. Ghost Face works well enough on small indoor maps like “The Game,” but he is largely out of his depth in larger ones like Mother’s Dwelling.

Ghost Face’s Stealth Mode and Stalk Meter

Ghost Face’s special ability, Night Shroud, triggers Stealth Mode, making him undetectable as long as he doesn’t perform an attack or is spotted by Survivors. Once within 40 meters of a target, players can start to press the Power button to fill Ghost Face’s Stalk Meter at 20 pts per second when standing or moving or 40 pts per second when leaning out of cover. The latter is the one you will want to use and master. Once the meter reaches 100 pts, the Survivor will be marked and Exposed, allowing Ghost Face to kill them in one hit for a minute. Marked Survivors also cannot reveal the Killer.

A common strategy is to fill the meter to 99% and then stop. After that, sneak behind the Survivor, tap the Stalk Meter, and then instantly kill them.

Alternative Killers That Are Better Than Ghost Face (In 2026)

Hopefully, Ghost Face will always be, at least, decent enough to be usable on a couple of maps; however, we cannot pretend that he is an A-tier Killer. Simply put, there are too many better options in 2026, ones that offer stealth, speed, and versatility.

• The Shape – After a revamp toward the end of 2025, Mike Myers went from a joke to one of the better M1 Killers, if not downright the best. At Tier 3, The Shape puts pressure on all Survivors, while Ghost Face can only target one at a time. That said, Danny is a better stealth option.
• The Wraith – On large maps that expose Ghost Face’s slow movement, The Wraith is a more viable candidate. He moves extremely quickly and remains Undetectable, allowing him to patrol generators effectively. However, he is not a one-hit kill option like Ghost Face can be in expert hands.
• The Ghoul – Arguably, this Killer has become Ghost Face’s replacement, offering a playstyle that is a more aggressive take on stealth. Kagune Leap provides great mobility and enables Ken to close distances quickly.
