Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director Daniel Vávra has criticized the story presented in the latest Grand Theft Auto 6 showcase. The veteran writer and designer said the GTA 6 footage gave him “zero story hook,” with his skepticism extending to the absence of longtime Rockstar writer Dan Houser.
Vávra’s comments are directed at the so-called “Extended Look” at GTA 6, which premiered as a six-hour Netflix exclusive on August 27 before being reuploaded to Rockstar’s website and social media channels. The 27-minute video provided the first official preview of GTA 6 gameplay, though it was not the first footage to surface publicly due to an individual or group known as CyberLeek, who had circulated over a dozen leaked gameplay clips throughout the second half of August 2026.

In an August 28 X post, Vávra argued that a good story needs internal and external conflict, complex characters with understandable motives, a consistent world, and a clear theme or point. He praised Rockstar’s presentation as a “fantastic tech demo bordering on a technological miracle,” but said Jason and Lucia came across as “two uninteresting sociopaths” who kill for money and other criminals. He said the footage offered “zero story hook” and seemed better suited to multiplayer and unscripted chaos than advertising the kind of narrative-driven single-player crime drama that GTA 6 is supposed to be.
In later replies on X, Vávra argued that 26 minutes was enough time to establish a stronger hook rather than merely keep showing “random stuff without any context.” He also pointed to Dan Houser’s 2020 departure from Rockstar as cause for concern. Houser was the lead writer on every major Rockstar game during his long tenure at the studio, which he co-founded in 1998. With Houser having confirmed that he had no involvement in GTA 6‘s story, Vávra suggested there is reason to suspect the upcoming game could prioritize sandbox spectacle over a more coherent narrative.

But There Are Some Promising Signs Regardless
The biggest reason not to treat Vávra’s criticism as a verdict on the finished story emerged one day before the Extended Look showcase. In Rockstar’s response to the recent GTA 6 leaks, the studio called the unauthorized footage “heartbreaking” because it was not how it indended for anyone to first experience the game, all the while asking players to avoid spoilers where possible until launch. That does not confirm that the Extended Look was edited specifically to conceal major plot developments, but it certainly hints to that effect.
More importantly, marketing materials Rockstar has disclosed outside the Extended Look already contain several of the elements Vávra said he was looking for. The official GTA 6 synopsis says an easy score goes wrong, drawing Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy across the fictional state of Leonida and forcing them to rely on each other as the stakes rise in order to survive. Rockstar also describes Jason as a former soldier who turned to working for drug runners despite wanting an easier life, while Lucia is seeking a better future after leaving prison. None of this guarantees that the story will be compelling in practice, but it does establish clearer motivations and external conflict than the August 27 gameplay montage conveyed on its own.
