Deltarune Chapter 5 Is Going To Break My Heart Later This Month

Deltarune Chapter 5 Is Going To Break My Heart Later This Month

Hello, it’s me; I’m the winner today, because I got exactly what I wanted out of today’s Nintendo Direct: a release date for Chapter 5 of Deltarune. It’s coming as a free update to the game on June 24, and it looks like a popular fan theory about its contents has just been confirmed, too.

As with most Deltarune trailers, this one was a real blink-and-you’ll-miss-it of clips, so bear with me. The entire trailer basically affirms the fan speculation that the “Dark World” for Chapter 5 will be created in Asgore’s flower shop, given the prevalence of flower-themed enemies and motifs. I won’t get into the rabbit hole that is the color scheme of the trailer (pink and gold) and why that matters, or how this all confirms players’ theories that an in-universe manga plot described by a hammer-wielding turtle is actually an unsubtle prophecy dictating what’s going to happen in the rest of the game. But it is super interesting that we only see clips from the Dark World (and a few from prior chapters) in this trailer. Chapter 5’s Light World segment is supposed to take place at a festival during which a whooooole lot of major story points are expected to come crashing together. It’s gonna be a big one, folks, and I expect to cry several times.

If none of that made any dang sense to you, for heaven’s sake, play Deltarune. It’s a follow-up (though not necessarily a sequel) to Toby Fox’s beloved 2015 indie RPG Undertale that’s expected to unfold over at least seven chapters, four of which are out now. The first two are free to play, and buying the remaining two will get you all the rest of the future chapters for no extra cost as well. Deltarune itself is an absolutely wild ride, with an endearing cast of characters, a fun mesh of a turn-based RPG and bullet hell battle systems, and a deep mystery at its heart that you can (optionally) get really, really into if you’re the sort of Pepe Silva fanatic that likes this sort of thing.

I have a lot of friends who are waiting until the whole game is out to play it, but let me tell you, there’s already a whole game’s worth of game in here, and being along for the episodic ride with the rest of the community is seriously a blast. I think this may be a little like what it felt like to follow along with Kentucky Route Zero back in the day, but significantly more unhinged.

Anyway, come June 24, I’ll be playing this to the exclusion of anything else. See ya on the other side!
