Destiny 2 Just Got a New Update for March 2026, But Fans Aren’t Happy About It

Destiny 2 received a fresh patch this week. While the community is always eager for improvements, the latest arrival of update 9.5.5.5 has left many feeling underwhelmed during a particularly quiet period for the franchise. The Destiny 2 update’s incredibly short list of changes has sparked a wave of frustration and dark humor among the remaining player base.

For years, the game has relied on a steady rhythm of expansions and updates to keep its dedicated players engaged. However, the title is currently dealing with a number of challenges, including record-low player counts that recently dipped to a peak of just 7,000 concurrent users on Steam. This represents a staggering 98% loss in players since the launch of The Edge of Fate expansion less than two years ago. The next major content drop formerly titled Shadow and Order was delayed from March until June, and the game is currently weathering a significant content drought while Bungie focuses resources on the launch of its new extraction shooter, Marathon.

Destiny 2 Player Count is Way Down

Destiny 2’s player count has fallen off significantly since the launch of The Edge of Fate, now sitting at a fraction of its peak in July.

The Threadbare Details of Update 9.5.5.5

The most recent update for Destiny 2 is perhaps most notable for what it didn’t include. The patch notes for 9.5.5.5 contained only a single general fix: an issue where certain weapons were not receiving benefits from their Weapon Foundry Sponsorships when active. This one-sentence patch followed nearly three hours of server downtime on March 10, leading fans on Reddit to lament that the development team feels like it has been reduced to a skeleton crew. The maintenance window began at 6 AM PDT and concluded around noon, affecting all platforms and even impacting the first Destiny.

Despite the lack of major gameplay changes, Bungie did outline several “community activations” and scheduling updates in its March 12 “This Week in Destiny” (TWID) blog post. According to Bungie, the following activities and updates are live or upcoming for the week of March 12:

  • Community Challenge: Postcards from the Frontier: Bungie is asking players to share screenshots of environments from the Renegades expansion on social media using the hashtag #RenegadesPostcard.
  • New Player Guide: Buildcrafting: A new chapter of the guide has been released, focusing on the concepts behind creating powerful character builds rather than listing specific meta-setups.
  • Suros Week (March 10–17): All Suros foundry weapons, such as the Motif-41 and Monody-44, are currently overcharged and deal extra damage in Portal activities.
  • Trials of Osiris (March 13–17): The competitive mode returns on the map Javelin-4, with the Corundum Hammer as the primary reward.
  • Heavy Ammo Surge (March 17–24): Starting next week, a modifier in the Portal will allow Power weapons to recharge ammunition rapidly.
  • Guardian Games Tease: Bungie confirmed that more information regarding the annual Guardian Games event will be shared next week, with the event itself scheduled to begin on March 24.
  • Known Issues Tracking: The team is currently investigating bugs involving generators in the “Fearsome Retainer” mission and visual glitches where the Wolfsbane weapon displays Void effects instead of Solar.

The reaction to these updates has been overwhelmingly negative across social media. Reddit users described the new screenshot challenge as “the most pathetic event” ever seen in a live service game, with some suggesting it was merely an attempt to get players to do “free marketing” for the studio. Many fans appear to believe Bungie has effectively moved Destiny to the back burner to ensure Marathon succeeds, especially since Marathon is launching in the same window that the Shadow and Order update was originally intended for.

destiny 2 renegades livestream reveal

Further adding to the negative sentiment expressed by fans is the irony of Bungie releasing a New Player Guide at a time when concurrent player numbers are at an all-time low. According to Paul Tassi at Forbes, the situation has become so dire that Sony was forced to record a $204.2 million impairment charge due to the game’s underperformance, raising serious questions about whether the franchise can survive.

Bungie has promised that the June update, which will be renamed, will finally introduce long-awaited features like Pantheon 2.0 and Tier 5 stats for Exotic Armors. However, for the Destiny 2 players still logging in daily, a screenshot contest and a single bug fix are doing little to bridge the gap.
