Destiny 2 Players Are Planning Another Server Slam

Destiny 2 players intend to meet up to celebrate the final Bungie Day before the game ends, now that its active development has officially wrapped up and there’s no intention to continue producing any content for it. Destiny 2 will remain up and running for the foreseeable future, of course, but the fact remains that the team responsible for it has been laid off, with Marathon taking over as the current Bungie flagship.

While the game would always have drawn in a nostalgic crowd for its grand finale, it certainly helps that Destiny 2‘s final update was great, actually. Barring some notable bugs and technical problems, the game is now in a remarkably healthy state with plenty of relevant content and a virtually infinite pool of loot to chase after. This means that though some may be put off by the idea of there never being more content released for Destiny 2, the bits that are present are a high point and will give players plenty to enjoy.

Former Destiny 2 Community Lead Reveals Bungie Was Close To Shutting Down Before Sony Acquisition

Destiny 2 developer Bungie was ‘below the red line’ and close to shutting down before Sony acquired it, according to a former community manager.

Even though Bungie blames Destiny 2 for its recent layoffs, the community is more than willing to show up to celebrate the game and the studio one last time before everything grinds to a halt. As announced by the appropriately named Twitter fan account, Guardians For Destiny 3, “On 7/7, we run it back. One last Bungie Day on the books. Show Sony we’re still here.” Bungie Day has always been the company’s annual community celebration held on July 7, which makes sense when taking into account how obsessed Bungie’s been with the number in the past. Bungie Day previously hosted big charity drives with opportunities to earn various in-game prizes, though it’s likely that the event will be less glamorous than it had been in the past, given the current state of Bungie.

Bungie has issued plenty of warnings about what’s happening to Destiny 2 and all the content surrounding the game in the past couple of weeks. Events and routines established a decade ago have been grinding to a halt in a strikingly short period of time, and the community has been taken aback by how quickly it’s all gone down. Guardians interested in participating in the big Bungie Day 2026 rally just need to return to the Tower and hang around, or even simply log into the game. The goal is to “show [Sony] the audience they’re missing out on,” as per the announcement, but it’s worth pointing out that there are almost 100,000 concurrent players enjoying the game concurrently on Steam on a daily basis. The community is clearly enjoying the game in its current state, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Bungie Day in particular pans out.

Sony’s official statement on Bungie’s fate has been predictably corporate, citing performance shortfalls and months of planning for the inevitable layoffs. This was, perhaps, to be expected. Sony spent $3.6 billion on Bungie back in 2022 in an attempt to bolster its live-service operations and enrich other in-house teams with what, at the time, seemed to be one of the most successful live-service studios on the market. Destiny 2 allegedly failed to deliver on these promises, however, and now Bungie employees have paid the price, with hundreds of jobs cut across three rounds of layoffs since the acquisition.

While the final Monument of Triumph update left the game in a solid state, it’s worth keeping in mind that Destiny 2 still has issues that should’ve been resolved. A variety of bugs and performance issues plague the experience, and it’s unclear how much support Bungie will be able to provide now that the majority of its staff has been fired. Odds are good that there’s at least one more hotfix on the horizon, but Destiny 2 players should still temper their expectations for the game, now that everything has been said and done.
