Destiny 2’s Hidden Cutscene Basically Confirms D3’s Story

Massive spoilers for Destiny 2’s Monument of Triumph update ahead.

Destiny 2‘s new and last content update, titled Monument of Triumph, includes a secret cutscene with Zavala and a one-of-a-kind interaction involving Lodi and The Winnower, pointing to where the story in Destiny 3 would go. Ever since it was confirmed that Destiny 2 would get a final content update on June 9, fans have been on a quest to try to change the fate of the game, or at least make Destiny 3 a reality. An example is how Destiny 2‘s final update got a whopping 167,000 players online thanks to a planned server slam.

Not only that, but fans also launched an official Destiny 3 petition that blew up, now totaling over 379,000 unique signatures. Destiny 2 also became the number one game on Steam for sales and revenue on June 9. It’s unclear whether all this will have any impact on Sony’s or on Bungie’s leadership’s decisions, but the hashtags “SaveDestiny” and “WeWantDestiny3” have been trending across social media. Now, a Destiny 3 seems even more needed after the ending of Monument of Triumph.

Destiny 2 players return in force for the final Monument of Triumph update, causing the game to experience server and login issues due to demand.

Destiny 2 Monument of Triumph Secret Cutscene and Ending

Destiny 2‘s Monument of Triumph update includes a secret cutscene with Zavala (and later Ikora) in the Tower, where Zavala makes a speech about what duty means to him and how it has affected his life. Now that things are more peaceful than before, he decides to step down as the Vanguard’s Commander, and that’s when Ikora walks in and is asked to take on the mantle. It’s unclear whether this means Zavala will stop being the Commander, or also step down from the Vanguard entirely, but it’s a story that deserves to be continued.

Even more so is what happens next, as players can then travel to the EDZ and go to the Traveler’s Shard, find a Taken portal, and approach it. They will then be taken to the Traveler’s Shard, where Lodi stands. He is then used as a vessel, like he normally is by the Nine, but instead, it’s an “unknown voice,” speaking of a final confrontation with the Guardian. This is most likely The Winnower, the same entity that spoke to Oryx and The Witness, among others, and who played the Flower Game with the Gardener. This is basically confirmation that Destiny 2‘s Fate Saga was going to end by binding the Nine, only for The Winnower to show up and become the ultimate threat.

To unlock the cutscene with Destiny 2‘s Zavala and then the dialogue with The Winnower, players have to complete seven of the “top-left” Triumphs within the various sections of the Monument of Triumph tab. Then, they can watch the cutscene by interacting with a shard of the Traveler in the Tower to wait until evening. After this cutscene, The Winnower’s dialogue is unlocked. To make it appear, players have to travel to the EDZ, particularly The Sludge, and travel through the forest that leads to the Traveler’s Shard from the Red War. A Taken portal is there, and interacting with it will start the sequence.

Support for Destiny 2 is still going strong, with well over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam yesterday, June 10. There will also be an event in support of Destiny 3 on June 17 within Warframe, and the petition for D3 is still active. Hopefully, these efforts don’t go to waste, and Destiny 3‘s story tackles all the beats that Destiny 2 is now hinting at, without the ability to flash them out.
