Destiny 2's Major Shadow And Order Update Is Being Delayed And Renamed

Bungie has officially confirmed that its next major Destiny 2 update, Shadow and Order, will be delayed over three months to allow for major revisions. The update was initially planned for March 3, just two days before Bungie’s new shooter Marathon is set to launch.

The Shadow and Order update, intended as a major addition to December’s Renegades expansion, was announced all the way back in May last year as part of Destiny 2’s Year of Prophecy roadmap. With the release date sitting so close to Marathon’s and a lack of information from Bungie on the fast approaching update, the news of a delay comes as no surprise to most Destiny fans.

Bungie’s official announcement of the delay, which was posted to social media and Discord, doesn’t make any mention of Marathon, and instead says that the update is being delayed due to “undergoing large revisions.” The scope of the update will be expanded, will now include “sizable quality-of-life updates,” and will be renamed before it is released on June 9, 2026.

“We will provide exact details closer to release covering previously announced Weapon Tier Upgrading,” Bungie says of the update. “But also additions like expanding Tiered Gear to all Raid and Dungeon activities, Pantheon 2.0, Tier 5 stats for Exotic Armors, and more.”

The more than three-month delay leaves a sizeable gap in Destiny 2’s content schedule, though Bungie says it will continue to push regular updates during this time, including “routine bug fixes and stability improvements, continued portal modifiers, Guardian Games (March), and the return of a more frequent Iron Banner cadence (April).”

While some fans are happy for Bungie to take the time to improve Destiny 2’s core gameplay experience, others have expressed concern about the team’s ability to release new content often enough to keep long-term players engaged with the nearly nine year old game. Some have inferred that the Shadow and Order delay will also push back the Shattered Cycle expansion, which was intended to launch in Summer 2026
