Embracer-owned Eidos Montreal is laying off 124 people in the Deus Ex studio’s latest wave of downsizing. Studio leader and 19-year veteran, David Anfossi, is also stepping down amid the cuts.
“The reduction in workforce affecting 124 employees is a result of changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams,” the studio announced on Monday. “Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and concentrate efforts where Eidos Montréal can be most effective.”
The statement continued:
We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance. Supporting those impacted with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams moving forward.
Also, after many years as Head of Studio, David Anfossi and Eidos Montréal are also parting ways. We thank David for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors. A transition plan is underway, and further updates will be shared as new leadership is finalized.
The lack of new leadership to announce suggests that a transition plan may not in fact have been underway before the studio was hit with fresh layoffs. There was an earlier round of cuts last December, followed by an initial wave of layoffs that hit 75 people back in March 2025.
Insider Gaming reported earlier this year that Eidos was working on a new AAA open-world action-adventure that has been in development since 2019 and had little chance of recouping its budget. Several other projects have been mothballed at the studio over the years, including pitches for another Deus Ex sequel. Eidos Montreal released Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021 and has recently been supporting Xbox on Grounded 2 and Fable.
