Diablo 4 Players Are Calling for QoL Endgame Change

Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred players want War Plans to become account-bound, rather than character-bound. The new Diablo 4 expansion overhauled the game’s endgame content with the addition of War Plans as a way to streamline endgame activities and reward players for participating in them. However, many players are upset that their hard work maxing out the upgrade trees for each War Plans activity doesn’t carry over when they start a new character.

In general, Lord of Hatred’s updates to mechanics like the Skill Tree, Uniques, and gear progression with the Horadric Cube have been a hit with fans, resulting in record-high Steam player counts for Diablo 4. Combined with the new Warlock and Paladin classes and the Lord of Hatred campaign, the expansion has renewed the spark in Diablo 4 nearly three years after launch. As the honeymoon period starts to wear off, some of the flaws of the expansion are starting to show, including the grind associated with War Plans.

Diablo 4 Players Want War Plans Progress to Transfer Between Characters

In a Reddit post with over 1.4K upvotes, Diablo 4 fans have expressed their frustration with having to start from scratch in progressing their War Plans when starting a new character. Participating in War Plans allows players to unlock points for a specific activity’s upgrade tree, giving them access to modifiers for these activities that can both increase the challenge as well as the rewards. Unfortunately, the time it takes to complete a War Plan activity’s upgrade tree can be lengthy, making it a slog for players to complete every time they start a new seasonal Diablo 4 character.

There are also seven different upgrade trees included in the War Plans mechanic, with each one corresponding to a different endgame activity:

This means that players have to fully upgrade seven different activities on every character they create, resulting in a massive time sink for Diablo 4 players who want to optimize their endgame progression. Some commenters on Reddit have suggested ways to improve this feature so that there isn’t as much of a grind for future Diablo 4 seasons.

User Kain-rpg suggested an account-wide XP boost for War Plans after the player completes the upgrade tree for the first time, so that new characters a player creates can avoid some of the grind. User yawnlikeseggs suggested a further breakdown, where the first few levels of an activity’s upgrade tree are easy to earn before requiring progressively more XP to reach the next level, but offering more branching nodes for customization as a trade-off. Ultimately, the ideal solution is to make War Plans a permanent, account-wide unlock, with the option to opt out of the shared progression or reset it when creating a new character in the event a player likes the challenge of completing the upgrade tree.

Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred‘s introduction of new Torment difficulties up to tier 12 has also made the game far more challenging the deeper players get into the endgame. As such, the bonuses granted by upgrading War Plans activities are almost a requirement for any player hoping to push into the highest Torment tiers. Right now, there is no word on how Diablo 4 plans to balance this feature in the future, but it likely won’t happen until at least the start of Season 14.
