After the season that brought the game-changing Chaos Armor mechanic to Diablo 4, it seemed like a tall order for Season 11 to follow up with an equally engaging feature. Against the odds, the reworked gear upgrading system seems to have created an equal, if not greater, diversity of Diablo 4 builds, even if they are not as flashy as those with Chaos Armor in Season 10. Moreover, these changes have given players the tools to craft pieces of gear that surpass what was previously possible, with a new god roll for players to chase as they create their ideal build.
Diablo 4 Season 11’s changes to Tempering and Masterworking have made it easier than ever to get that perfect upgrade. No longer are Diablo 4 players at risk of bricking their best gear with a bad Temper roll, since now they can choose which affix to Temper with unlimited re-rolls via Scrolls of Restoration. The addition of Sanctification also allows players to get a final, powerful upgrade that has the potential to unlock an affix combination never before possible.
Diablo 4 Season 11’s New Gear Upgrading Mechanics Make 5-Greater Affix Items a Reality
One of the best new features added to the Tempering system is the ability for a Tempered affix to be a Greater Affix. In contrast to a standard affix, Greater Affixes allow the Tempered stat to go beyond the maximum of its standard variant. Ancestral items drop with at least one Greater Affix already, and now players can add one more to an item via Tempering.
How to Get 5 Greater Affixes on an Item in Diablo 4
Previously, the maximum number of Greater Affixes that could appear on an Ancestral item in Diablo 4 was four. However, this is no longer the case with the new Tempering system. Now, players who are lucky enough to get an Ancestral drop with four Greater Affixes can Temper a fifth one onto it to create a more powerful version of the item than ever before.
Sanctification Can Potentially Enhance a Greater Affix Even Further for the Ultimate God Roll
Reddit user ThatPersonGuyThing posted their god roll Ancestral Ring to the Diablo 4 subreddit, showcasing the item’s five total Greater Affixes. While this rare feat is already impressive on its own, the gear shown in the post also has another feature that makes it one of the best possible gear rolls players can get on an item in Diablo 4 Season 11. In addition to Tempering a fifth Greater Affix on this ring, ThatPersonGuyThing notes that they also rolled an upgrade on that same affix when Sanctifying their ring.

This “Greater” Greater Affix took the maximum stat for the Primary Resource affix from +18 to +27 when being Tempered as a standard Greater Affix. However, the Sanctification added to this ring hit that same Greater Affix, raising its max stat to +41, to more than double the original max stat possible on that affix. While Sanctification can result in a variety of different outcomes, ranging from the addition of Legendary or Mythic Unique power to bonus item quality, the chance for a Greater Affix to be upgraded a second time is only around 20%. With four Greater Affixes on an Ancestral item plus the fifth Tempered Greater Affix, hitting this 20% chance roll when Sanctifying an item virtually guarantees players get one double Greater Affix upgrade, which was never possible in past Diablo 4 seasons.
