Diablo 5 was the big news coming out of BlizzCon 2026, and developer/publisher Blizzard Entertainment is continuing to release more about the game. That’s definitely surprising, given that Blizzard revealed that Diablo 5 isn’t releasing until 2029, but it seems the company doesn’t intend to be completely radio silent about what’s next for Sanctuary.
Already, for example, Blizzard has revealed three of the classes in Diablo 5: the Monk, the Demon Hunter, and the Plague Knight. Developers have detailed key elements of the story (a survival focus, Diablo’s victory over Sanctuary) and revealed how players are on the run with a caravan of other survivors. Everything revealed so far doesn’t mean Blizzard is dedicated to complete transparency in communication between now and 2029, but at least around major events, it seems developers are encouraged to share small details about Diablo 5‘s development.
Diablo 5 Gets First Shoot
Neil David Carter, the cinematic director on Diablo 5, recently made a social media post about the “first shoot” on the game. It’s not much, simply showing a mocap studio, but such a post is pretty unusual for any game’s development. As many gamers know, development is often secretive for a variety of reasons (which makes Diablo 5‘s early announcement surprising to begin with), so to see something like a “first shoot” confirmed on social media is refreshing, if brisk.

It’s worth mentioning that a “first shoot” is a small update. It doesn’t mean anything too serious, like Diablo 5‘s story being 100% complete. It certainly could be, but game development involves many spinning plates, and Blizzard likely starts cinematic work early in the process. After all, Hollywood-level CGI can pretty much be found in every Diablo game. The franchise’s cinematics help bring its demons, heroes, and larger conflicts to life, making the work behind Diablo 5‘s presentation worth watching. Overall, it’s a look behind the curtain, not a sign that the entire project is anywhere near completion.

It’s possible, however, that this is all part of a wider Blizzard strategy to keep Diablo 5‘s story, gameplay, and world on everyone’s mind years ahead of release. After all, while fans will reasonably expect Blizzard to go radio silent soon, fans are now going to expect it at BlizzCon 2027 and BlizzCon 2028 ahead of its 2029 release. In fact, it’s already a pretty safe bet that BlizzCon 2028 would reveal Diablo 5‘s proper release date (unless it happened to be after BlizzCon 2029—even then, it’s not a bad bet).
Hopefully, these small updates continue throughout Diablo 5‘s development. There’s almost no way it remains as consistent for the years to come, but hopefully BlizzCon and major events are not the only stops on the road to a new Sanctuary.
