Diablo 5 Reveals New Story and Protagonist Details

Diablo 5 will cast players as the “Heir to Westmarch,” a new protagonist fleeing the remains of a kingdom conquered by the series’ titular Prime Evil. The newly revealed setup gives Diablo himself a direct role in the player character’s journey, with Blizzard confirming that the two share a mysterious connection.

Diablo 5 was officially announced on September 12 during BlizzCon 2026, with Blizzard confirming that its story takes place roughly 100 years after the previous mainline entry in the ARPG franchise. That sizable jump puts the sequel well beyond the events of Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, opening on a Sanctuary where Diablo has already won and transformed Westmarch into a full-fledged outpost of Hell.

Blizzard confirms that Diablo is officially getting an animated Netflix TV show.

Diablo 5’s Heir Has a Mysterious Connection to Diablo

Blizzard has yet to explain what the title “Heir to Westmarch” actually means, though it obviously implies the protagonist having some kind of claim to the fallen kingdom. What the developer has confirmed is that the Heir possesses an unexplained connection to Diablo, making them both a threat to him and especially vulnerable to his influence. Narrative director Jennifer Hepler said the campaign will eventually reveal how that bond came to exist. She stopped short of confirming that its origin will serve as the central mystery of Diablo 5, though given everything else said as part of Diablo 5‘s BlizzCon 2026 reveal, that remains a distinct possibility.

Backstory aside, the connection also appears to have practical consequences. Blizzard revealed that the protagonist can enter and survive the Terror Realm, where those captured by Diablo can otherwise become trapped, and suggested that this ability will expose the Heir to powers or knowledge beyond the reach of ordinary survivors. Exactly what those advantages involve remains unclear, but the premise gives the player character a reason to confront Diablo in ways the broader resistance cannot. That central conflict unfolds across the Western Continent, which Blizzard describes as the heart of Diablo’s reign. His influence can reshape terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards between visits, meaning familiar areas in Diablo 5 may change as players traverse the ruined landscape.

Diablo 5’s Heir Won’t Be Traveling Alone

And Their Caravan Won’t Be Just a Group of Vendors

This shifting world is one of several ways Blizzard is reworking established series systems for the sequel, alongside its previously detailed plans for having Diablo 5 embrace Diablo 2-inspired itemization. With towns and strongholds lost, the Heir’s main base will instead take the form of a caravan assembled while traveling through Sanctuary. Its members will serve practical roles, including as vendors, but Blizzard also intends them to be recurring characters with overarching stories of their own. Two examples revealed so far are a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin.

While Blizzard is still withholding many story details, the company has been more forthcoming about other aspects of the upcoming ARPG. These include Diablo 5‘s class list, which is already confirmed to include Demon Hunter, Plague Knight, and Monk. The game itself is currently planned for a spring 2029 release.
