Blizzard’s latest Diablo 5 update has shed new light on the future of Diablo 4, once and for all. There has been some concern about how Blizzard will handle its previous game when Diablo 5 releases, and Blizzard has finally revealed its plans for 2029 and beyond.
Diablo 5 was announced earlier this month at BlizzCon, surprising those in attendance and everyone watching at home in equal measure. Given that Diablo 4 was only released in 2023, and the franchise’s historically long wait times between mainline games, it felt as though Diablo 5 simply wasn’t on the agenda yet.
Diablo 4 Seasons Officially Continuing After Diablo 5 Release
In an interview with Icy Veins at BlizzCon, Blizzard Game Director Brent Gibson revealed that new Diablo 4 seasons will continue to be released after Diablo 5‘s launch, ending any speculation that the game would be immediately put on life support in favor of the new title. “We are planning on supporting seasons as long as the community continues to show up for D4,” Gibson said. “Similar to what we have in D2 and D3. There are still people who play those games, and as long as you’re showing up, we’re going to continue to be making content.”

It’s impossible to argue against Blizzard’s support for older titles. Diablo 3 Season 40 releases on October 2, which reintroduces the Light’s Calling theme that debuted in Season 27. Much of the recent support for Diablo 3 has been cycling older content in and out of rotation, but the 2012 title received brand-new stuff for a very long time after its launch. That Blizzard still bothers with the seasons at all for those who are still playing is a testament to its dedication to the community.

It’s good to have the future of Diablo 4 cleared up like this. Blizzard has already confirmed that Diablo 4 won’t receive any more expansions, leaving Lord of Hatred as the last one. Even so, there’s still plenty to come, with the Amazon class planned for release next year.
As for Diablo 5, fans won’t have to wait long to learn more about the next game in the series. Although it isn’t due for release until 2029, Blizzard confirmed in its initial announcement that there will be regular updates on the project throughout 2027. The developer has already released what is arguably a surprising amount of information about the game, including early story details and even Diablo 5‘s first classes.
