Doom: The Dark Ages is coming to Diablo Immortal, and the upcoming crossover once again highlights the difference between limited-time events in Blizzard’s mobile ARPG and those same crossovers in Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 already received its Doom: The Dark Ages crossover in March, introducing a batch of free Doom-themed cosmetics as well as some pricey premium looks for those willing to spend real money. Those cosmetics are available until the end of the game’s current season, set to conclude on April 28 with the launch of Diablo 4’s next expansion.
Diablo Immortal’s Doom crossover is far more involved. As detailed in an official blog post, in the free-to-play mobile game, players will actually get to take on the forces of Doom: The Dark Age’s hell. From April 15 through May May 13, Diablo Immortal’s Survivor’s Bane mode will transform into Slayer’s Bane, a mode where players will get to wield the power of the Doom Slayer with six unique skills based on Doom: The Dark Ages’ arsenal of weapons, all culminating in a boss battle against the iconic Cyberdemon.
A new 2-Star gem, The Crucible, is also being added to the game, one that makes it so that dealing damage to enemies below a set amount of maximum life slaughters them, dealing increased damage the lower their health is. Defeating enemies this way grants a stacking buff that increases damage and movement speed. Some free weapon cosmetics are also available as part of the event, and those who want more Doom: The Dark Ages looks can purchase the Praetor Armor of the Slayer or the Slayers’ Companions bundle (which adds Doom’s Cyberdragon and Cacodemon as familiars).
It’s not the first time the Diablo Immortal version of a crossover was way cooler than its Diablo 4 counterpart. When Diablo crossed over with Berserk last year the case was much the same, with Diablo Immortal getting actual in-game activities based on the late Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy masterwork. Diablo 4, on the other hand, got a few free cosmetics and a bunch of premium ones players could spend money on.
Diablo 4 does receive special events every now and then. Most recently, Blizzard transformed Diablo 4’s world bosses into a giant chicken for April Fools’ Day, one that even dropped unique loot. However, the event only lasted a week.
Though the event didn’t last long enough, Diablo 4 players won’t have to wait for new content. The game’s second expansion, Lord of Hatred, releases April 28 and introduces two additional classes (the already playable Paladin, and the Warlock). It will also completely rework the game’s class skill trees by removing passive skills entirely, as well as introduce eight new Torment difficulty tiers.
