Does Pokémon Pokopia Take Place In A Post-Apocalypse?

Does Pokémon Pokopia Take Place In A Post-Apocalypse?

In the months leading up to Pokémon Pokopia, there was a lot of speculation about whether or not the cozy life sim game takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of the Pokémon world. There are buildings that look like dilapidated Pokémon Centers, humans are seemingly gone, and it’s been long enough since Pokémon saw them that Professor Tangela is surprised to see a human when the player shows up looking like one. So now that the game is out, what’s the deal? Do you wanna know? Are you cool with spoilers? I wasn’t thrilled to have spoiled myself on it but that’s the job. You’ve had plenty of time to close this article. Let’s dive in.

So, yes, it does seem that Pokopia takes place in a post-apocalyptic Kanto, but there was no mass extinction event, no zombie outbreak, and no plague that wiped out humanity. It turns out the reason Kanto is in such a sorry state is actually because of a climate crisis. According to notes you can find in the game, humanity began something called the Pokémon Conservation Project, a plan to safely store all the Pokémon in the world in a massive computer storage system similar to the ones players use in the main games, while humanity took refuge in space. Some humans then returned to the planet to survey the environment and maintain the Pokémon’s storage system. This was all due to “weather disturbances,” so Kyogre and Groudon have some explaining to do.

🚨 Pokémon Pokopia lore spoilers 🚨

It seems that humans wanted to store all Pokémon on the planet in a massive computer system while humanity took refuge in space.

That’s pretty bleak. Pokémon games have definitely gotten more comfortable with taking darker turns in the lore, but humanity evacuating the planet and having to leave their Pokémon behind until a solution is found? That’s crazy. I love it, actually. It’s the kind of dark twist you find out at the end of a visual novel. I’m still playing Pokopia so I’m curious to see how deep this rabbit hole goes, but hey, those fan theories turned out to be right.
