Doom Developer Teases "A Lot Coming Up This Week" As Studio Celebrates 35th Anniversary

Doom and Wolfenstein creators id Software is celebrating its 35th anniversary, with studio director Marty Stratton teasing some announcements during the momentous occasion.

Stratton, in a new video from the studio marking the anniversary, vaguely mentions that the team have “a lot coming up this week to celebrate with all of you”, continuing on to say that “throughout the years we’ll be celebrating this anniversary, and a lot of other anniversaries.” The studio’s X account also shared a promotional image for the anniversary, depicting the Doom Slayer from the studio’s most recent title, Doom: The Dark Ages.

Stratton and game director Hugo Martin thanked the studio’s dedicated fanbase, while also praising id as a “visionary studio” and thanking its original co-founders. “We always say we stand on the shoulders of giants,” Stratton concluded.

Following the release of Doom: The Dark Ages in May 2025, id Software has yet to formally reveal what the studio is currently working on. The studio has worked exclusively on Doom since the series was rebooted in 2016, going on to release Doom Eternal in 2020 and several story expansions shortly afterwards. Wolfenstein, one of the studio’s other hallmark franchises, has recently been handled by MachineGames, with rumors that the studio is developing the third entry in its rebooted trilogy.

id Software was formally founded on February 1, 1991 by John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack. The studio has been credited with numerous industry-defining technical enhancements, most notably the creation of the first-person shooter in Wolfenstein 3D in 1992. The studio’s most popular franchise, Doom, had its first entry released in 1993, with multiplayer shooter Quake following in 1996. The studio was purchased by ZeniMax Media in 2009, which itself was purchased by Microsoft in 2021.
