Dragon Ball GT will always occupy an odd place in the franchise’s history, but years upon years later, it still has its own fans who are currently rallying around an upcoming, in-the-works release. The Dragon Ball GT anime ended in 1997 (its Toonami run began in 2003 and ended in 2005), but it has remained in many conversations, and even Dragon Ball Daima has canonized the Super Saiyan 4 transformation.
Indeed, it seems fair to say that—beyond this new comeback for Dragon Ball GT—it still has a fairly sizable footprint on the franchise. Even Dragon Ball Z video games frequently return to the Dragon Ball GT characters, and the Super Saiyan 4 transformation remains popular even as new forms come into the fray. Now, fans can enjoy a classic Dragon Ball GT release in a brand-new way.
Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout is Making a Return to the Fore
Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout is one of the first Dragon Ball games to receive a North American release (and it may actually be the first one), and now it’s officially relevant again. A fan-made recompilation project is bringing Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout to Windows as a native PC game, so while it may not be an official re-release by Bandai and TOSE, it is an official return to fans’ hearts as they gather around it and discuss it online. This fan-made recompilation project requires players to own a disc (NA release SLUS-00493), but it essentially analyzes the data to run it on modern hardware.

The project is currently based on the North American version of Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout and is already working toward features that would make the game much more comfortable to play on modern PCs. One of the biggest changes being worked on is widescreen support, and some visual issues still need to be worked out, including problems with shadows and how certain objects are displayed at longer distances. Even so, getting a nearly 30-year-old PlayStation game running natively on Windows is an impressive starting point.
There is also a much more ambitious part of the project that could eventually change how Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout actually plays. The developers are experimenting with a replacement combat system that could allow them to modify movement, attacks, animations, and other parts of the Dragon Ball fighting game’s mechanics. It is still very much a work in progress, but that could give the project considerably more potential than a simple PC port. Final Bout was never exactly known for having the deepest Dragon Ball combat, so the ability to rework some of those systems may appeal to many fans.

Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout Recompiled is still being developed, meaning fans should not expect a finished, polished modern version just yet. Players will also need to provide their own copy of the supported North American game and the necessary PlayStation BIOS files.
