Golden Frieza is making a major comeback in a popular Dragon Ball game, being added as a playable character in Dragon Ball Legends alongside Android 17. The legendary version of the iconic Dragon Ball Z villain will be available in the game for nearly a month.

The storied history of the Dragon Ball franchise has produced a wealth of iconic villains, and Frieza easily stands as one of its most popular. Frieza first debuted in Dragon Ball Z as the main antagonist of the Planet Namek arc, and the villain responsible for the near-eradication of the Saiyans and the destruction of Planet Vegeta. After being defeated by Goku at the conclusion of the Frieza Saga, the villain has returned in multiple forms throughout the series, such as Metal Frieza, Future Frieza, and Golden Frieza. Now, one of Frieza’s most powerful incarnations is officially being added to a Dragon Ball game.
Dragon Ball Legends Adding Golden Frieza
Golden Frieza is officially being added to Dragon Ball Legends as a brand-new playable Legend for players to acquire. The powered-up version of Frieza will be paired up with another fan-favorite villain from the Dragon Ball Z franchise, joining Android 17 as a tag team on the newest gacha banner. The reveal trailer shows off some flashy tag-team attacks from the pair of villains, featuring some of the characters’ most iconic techniques like Frieza’s Death Ball for the tag team’s Ultimate Finish. Android 17 and Golden Frieza will debut in Dragon Ball Legends on July 29 and will be available until August 26.
Golden Frieza and Android 17 won’t be the only new characters added to Dragon Ball Legends with the July 29 update. Buu Saga antagonist Babidi will make his debut in Legends as a Supporter character with the patch, providing buffs and unique abilities to power up the player’s team. Babidi will feature the unique ability to overturn the results of a Rising Rush wager, potentially allowing players to win battles they may have lost otherwise. Dragon Ball Legends also confirmed a special anniversary campaign to celebrate the 3000-day anniversary of the launch of the game’s global version.
The addition of Golden Frieza to Dragon Ball Legends will act as the precursor to the character’s reappearance in the anime. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, premiering in Fall 2026, will not only include a reanimated version of the God of Destruction Beerus Saga, but also the Golden Frieza Saga featuring the iconic villain. The remake of the beloved Dragon Ball anime will feature a redesigned plot for both sagas based on Akira Toriyama’s original drafts and revised cuts of several scenes from the Dragon Ball Super anime.
Dragon Ball fans have no shortage of games to play from the beloved franchise, from mobile games to full console experiences. In addition to Dragon Ball Legends, the franchise supports two other mobile games in 2015’s Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle alongside the 2025 release of Dragon Ball: Gekishin Squadra. Dragon Ball also has multiple console releases on the way, gearing up to launch new DLC for Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero on July 29 and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 in 2027. Bandai Namco continues to give Dragon Ball fans plenty of ways to experience the iconic series.
