Pawns in Dragon’s Dogma 2 are essentially AI companions that do all kinds of different things. Of course, anyone familiar with how Pawns worked in the first game, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, already knows how this all works. But, for those of you who are seeing Pawns for the first time, you’re going to want to learn how they work.

Capcom have experimented with a plethora of different genres over the years, including the ever popular open-world.

The better you make your Main Pawn, for example, the more chances you have to get better items from other Dragon’s Dogma 2 players that summon your Pawn. Additionally, if you keep your Pawns gear upgraded, you’ll find that battles become easier as well. So, with that in mind, let’s go over exactly why you should change your Pawn’s equipment.

You Should Absolutely Change Your Pawns Equipment

There’s Not Really a Reason Why You Shouldn’t

Dragon's Dogma 2 - Accessing Pawn Rift

First and foremost, let’s just get this out of the way right up front, it’s always worth buying new equipment or upgrading equipment for your Pawn. The better their equipment, the longer they’ll live in fights and the more damage they’ll do. While it’s not incredibly necessary to constantly update, upgrade, or maintain your Pawn’s gear, you will want to get them new gear when you notice your own gear vastly outclasses theirs.

It’s also worth remembering that when you switch your Arisen or main Pawn to a new Vocation for the first time, you’ll automatically get starting gear for said Vocation, and a lot of the time that gear can last you quite a while. Plus, the better equipped your Pawn is, whether this is their Inclination, their Specialization, their literal equipment, their Augments, their Vocation Level, or their Core Skills, the more likely they are to be summoned by other players. And, you want your Pawn to be summoned as often as possible so that they can gather all sorts of knowledge in other worlds and so that you have more chances for other players to send your Pawn back with all kinds of different gifts.

Reasons Not To Switch Out Your Pawn’s Equipment

Or At Least Why You Don’t ‘Necessarily’ Need to Switch Their Equipment Constantly

Now that we know that it’s almost always worth it to switch out your Pawn’s equipment, let’s play devil’s advocate a bit and take a look at a couple of reasons why you might not want to change their equipment. Granted, the benefits from not changing their equipment are minimal at best, but there is still an argument to be made for leaving your Pawn basically ‘as is’:

1

It’s a waste of money

You might feel that constantly buying slightly better armor or weapons is a waste of gold in DD2. Obviously, this is dependent on your own personal opinion, but in general buying a new weapon that has anything less than +20-30 more attack won’t feel all that different. Additionally, that same money could also be spent upgrading your Arisen’s equipment instead.

2

Just let other players gear up your Main Pawn

Funnily enough, when your Pawn is summoned to another Arisen’s world, that otherworldy Arisen can actually put new gear on your Pawn. And Active Equipment, unlike other items, doesn’t automatically get put back in that Arisen’s storage when they dismiss your Pawn. So, you could just leave your Pawn with basic gear in the hopes that some kind DD2 player summons them and buys them a new armor set out of the kindness in their hearts (which actually does happen quite often).

3

You want to keep your Pawn weak to raise the game’s difficulty

While Dragon’s Dogma 2’s combat is built around using Pawns in combat, some of you who are into difficult games that rely purely on your own skill may feel that Pawns are a bit of a crutch. In that case, you might just leave your Pawn with their basic gear so that they help take the enemy aggro, but aren’t dealing much of their own damage. That way, the Pawns are making the game a bit easier, but they aren’t wiping out the enemies entirely on their own before you can even get there.

All three of the reasons listed above are valid in different ways, but in general, for the average Dragon’s Dogma 2 player, there’s not much of a reason to keep your Pawn equipped with the basic gear. As long as you have the excess gold and you plan to keep your Pawn on their current Vocation for a while, it makes sense to buy them better gear both in regards to weapons and armor.
