Dungeons & Dragons Classes Perfect for an Open-World RPG

Dungeons & Dragons Classes Perfect for an Open-World RPG

With Warlock‘s release on the horizon, many D&D fans have been thinking about the rest of the class roster and the kinds of archetypes and abilities that would fit perfectly into their very own open-world RPG. It is one thing to say that a Barbarian-centric RPG would be fun, but in practice, it becomes a lot more challenging to find talents and skills that would translate well to a much bigger playing field.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Has a Clever Answer to Open-World Handholding

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is tackling open-world handholding in a clever way, but whether it works across a full game is another question.

However, there are definitely a few classes that stand out as having some pretty awesome playstyles and abilities that could work incredibly well in the context of a standalone open-world RPG. They represent broad yet focused gameplay approaches that offer plenty of different combat and exploration options, as well as a couple of unique twists to things like dialogue and item usage.

Druid

Nature Is Your Oyster

Details:

  • Wild Shape opens the door for a huge number of transformations
  • Terrain reshaping with Plant Growth, Entangle, and more

No D&D class maps onto open-world design more directly than the Druid. Wild Shape is a wildly powerful ability that hands you an insane list of beast forms that can double as both combat and traversal options, meaning that you could freely transform into an owl and fly high into the skies, and then dive deep underground as a badger, before returning to the surface as a mighty bear ready to tear through anything in your path.

That kind of gameplay style follows typical Metroidvania logic of locking areas behind specific abilities, and I think that it would be incredibly cool to watch the world around you slowly open up as you gain access to more animals. The class’s other tools reinforce that same identity, with Plant Growth and Entangle reshaping the map on the fly, choking off a road or creating cover mid-fight, and you can even take the animalistic side further by having Speak with Animals, fundamentally altering who can be a vital NPC within the story.

Rogue

A Kit That Already Exists In The RPG World

Details:

  • Classic thief archetype with Fast Hands and Reliable Talent
  • More in-depth mechanics with Thieves’ Cant

Thieves are a class that has existed in the video game world for many years, but when translated to an open-world RPG, they often boil down to the same stealth and steal playstyles. However, the Rogue class has many more interesting tools that could be super cool to see brought to life, like Thieves’ Cant, where conversations could become a bigger focus, and the way you explore is guided by signals and signs hidden in the world.

Dungeons and Dragons Reveals Seven New Subclasses for Ravenloft: The Horrors Within

Ravenloft: The Horrors Within adds a slew of terrifying Dungeons and Dragons options for both players and DMs, including seven scary new subclasses.

You could still keep sneaking as the main point of the game, as other class features like Reliable Talent and Fast Hands allow you to fully embody the role of an expert Rogue capable of unlocking doors and disarming traps without ever being spotted. There’s a reason people love the Thieves Guild in The Elder Scrolls, so it makes perfect sense to expand that small piece of content into a much larger project.

Artificer

Modifying Every Last Item

Details:

  • Infuse Item functions as a full gear-modification system
  • Companion AI could be a nice additional skill

Artificer is one of the newer D&D classes, at least compared to the originals, yet it still has a very cool kit that I would love to see explored in an open-world context. The biggest feature that I think could drive an entire game is Infuse Item, which lets you customize and change the properties of your gear to create completely different archetypes within the same set of skills.

You could swap enhancements based on the current combat needs or introduce movement options for traversal that are infused into the equipment on your body, introducing a unique gameplay loop that relies less on an endless list of abilities and more on individual items. There is even potential to explore companions like Homunculus Servant, though most of the attention should remain on the custom loadouts and magical infusions.

Monk

The Power Within You

  • dungeons and dragons way of the four elements monkImage via Wizards of the Coast
  • dungeons and dragons monk

Details:

  • Ki functions as a fuel for powerful abilities
  • Melee and ranged options on offense and defense

Not every D&D protagonist needs to be a spellcaster, and the Monk proves a class can deliver the best of all worlds in a single package. Step of the Wind combines a bonus action, Dash or Disengage, with a jump-distance boost, functioning almost exactly like a built-in double-jump or dash-cancel system, while Unarmored Movement’s scaling speed bonus eventually lets high-level Monks run along vertical surfaces and across water, so you could start with some simple movement puzzles and lead into giant structures full of surfaces that you can navigate with ease.

The part of the kit worth spotlighting, though, is the Monk’s ki-fueled combat options, which, contrary to what a lot of people might expect, aren’t limited to close-quarters engagements. Way of the Sun Soul lets a Monk fire ki as a ranged damage cantrip straight from their hands, giving the class a genuine answer to enemies who won’t close the distance, and Deflect Missiles turns incoming ranged attacks into an almost parry-like response, opening the doors for some pretty interesting combat options on top of the limitless mobility.

Ranger

No Mechanical Dinosaurs Here

  • dungeons and dragons player's handbook 2024 hunter rangerImage via Wizards of the Coast
  • dungeons and dragons ranger

Details:

  • Monster or bounty tracking skills
  • Deft Explorer could introduce a nice curve of progression

Ranger gets cited a lot for its open-world potential, but a couple of its signature abilities would struggle to actually land in a video game setting. However, there are some great additions from Tasha’s Cauldron, like Deft Explorer and Primal Awareness, that bring the class up a few notches by giving you more ways to move around and explore or even track down enemies.

These replacement skills alter the class from a stationary glass cannon into something far more dynamic, and I could see a full bounty system built around hunting enemies working on a larger scale thanks to these more varied options. And if that becomes the main gameplay focal point, then I would argue that something like Favored Terrain could actually slot in quite nicely, changing how you move and explore in different biomes, something which is far more common in an open-world environment than a more tailored campaign.
