Developer The Coalition has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day was on the receiving end of a DDoS attack over the weekend. Posting to the Gears Community X account late on Sunday night, the studio explained this was why people had been struggling to login and stay logged in to the freshly launched Microsoft title.
“Earlier today,” begins the post, “some players experienced intermittent disconnects, login issues, or other service disruptions in Gears of War: E-Day. These issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services.”

Such attacks are the most rudimentary and brute-force means of disrupting a service, overloading servers with requests so that legitimate access becomes difficult or impossible. They’re also often fairly simple to block or mitigate once detected, or once a Cloudflare-shaped wall is put up. It seems The Coalition was able to get on top of the issue within a few hours, their post concluding, “Our teams are continuing to monitor and mitigate this activity. We’ll provide updates if there are any significant changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
However, this comes at a tricky time for the new game, one of Microsoft’s bigger releases of 2026, given earlier reporting that E-Day wasn’t selling in the sorts of numbers that had been hoped for. Apparently failing to shift a quarter of a million copies in its first week despite glowing reviews, and only 62,000 of those on Xbox, these numbers are somewhat complicated by the estimate of 1.7 million people playing via Game Pass.
As for why the game might have been the target of such an attack, you can take your pick. Views on Microsoft are extremely hostile right now for any number of reasons, including its gruesome job cuts during 2026 that could go on to affect The Coalition, the larger company’s continued support of Israel during the Gaza conflict, and somewhat inevitably, the dullards who have decided that the latest Gears game is somehow “woke.”
