Binary Domain featuring an alien force similar to the Locust Horde in Gears of War would have been far too similar, so the former opts for a robot invasion instead. Imagine Gears of War meets Terminator. It’s different enough that combat feels fresh and exciting, but it’s a close enough comparison to the Locust Horde that there is plenty of familiarity to look forward to. Instead of stepping into the shoes of Marcus Fenix, Binary Domain‘s main character is named Dan Marshall, and he has the same powerful bulkiness as Gears of War‘s main hero.
Those who are waiting for Gears of War: E-Day‘s second Beta weekend should know that it is only focused on the game’s multiplayer and features two different gameplay modes. Players can dive into Horde Siege (12-player PvE) or Team Deathmatch and Conquest (4v4 PvP). Fans who are more interested in the story will have to wait until the game’s launch day.
COG soldiers in Gears of War have some of the most iconic character designs in gaming. Their huge, bulky, over-the-top frames play into the series’ power fantasy, and Binary Domain takes direct inspiration from this. The robot hordes and the armor-clad heroes are small similarities compared to the overall gameplay, though.

The lower level of the map is a run-down slum-like world, while the upper level is where Tokyo’s affluent people live, painting a clear picture of the divide that the city has fallen victim to. This kind of setting as a backdrop for a robot invasion makes for a deeply compelling world. A dystopian Tokyo may not be the same as Gears of War‘s Sera, but a bleak futuristic vision of a real-life city gives Binary Domain some interesting Cyberpunk 2077 vibes in addition to the game’s Mass Effect-like qualities.
Binary Domain Can Give Gamers More Gears of War: E-Day Without Breaking the Bank
This applies specifically to Steam users. There are some great cheap Steam games out there, but Binary Domain is the perfect choice for Gears of War fans who want to experience something similar to E-Day but don’t want to jump back into the series entries they have already played. Gaming is quickly getting more expensive, and Binary Domain is only $15, which is really hard to beat.
There Is Plenty of Time to Revel in Some Solid Robot-Killing Combat Ahead of Gears of War: E-Day
Gears of War: E-Day‘s release date is one of the few AAA titles slated for October. The other two big names scheduled for that month are Star Wars: Galactic Racer on the exact same day and then Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23. This is going to be the last round of AAA launches before GTA 6 gets here, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how Gears of War: E-Day fares against its October competition.
The first Beta round definitely makes it look promising, and the second weekend is going to be even more interesting to watch unfold, since it will be completely open to the public instead of only being exclusive to pre-orders and Xbox Game Pass subscribers. With Gears of War: E-Day being first announced back in 2024, it’s been a long road to finally get to this point. The wait may not have been as grueling as some other games, but a prequel focused solely on such an important moment as Emergence Day has built plenty of anticipation.
