EA has announced the development of a new game from DICE and Respawn Entertainment, and rumors claim that it might be Star Wars Battlefront 3. The series began in the early 2000s with a pair of games published by EA. The publisher rebooted Star Wars Battlefront in 2015, and Star Wars Battlefront 2 was released on PC and consoles in 2017. The latter game saw significant support through 2020, with several updates and seasons based on Star Wars movies and shows.
There has been high demand for Star Wars Battlefront 3, ever since content updates ended for the most recent game. In the absence of a new entry, Star Wars Battlefront 2 continues to see interest from both new and existing players. A huge player spike in 2025 was attributed to the success of Andor Season 2 on Disney+, which proves that Star Wars fans are eager to see the series continue. Also contributing to the game’s continued success is the fact that Battlefront 2 remains easily accessible on platforms like Steam, PS5, and Xbox, and the game regularly receives discounts.
EA Announces New Shooter Game That Might be Star Wars Battlefront 3
In an announcement shared with EA employees, the publisher outlined numerous plans for the future. Part of those plans include a shooter that’s being made in collaboration between DICE and Respawn. EA did not offer any details about the project, but the developers and genre should give fans reason to suspect that this will be Star Wars Battlefront 3. DICE was the developer of the two most recent Star Wars Battlefront games, and Respawn is the studio responsible for the Star Wars Jedi games featuring Cal Kestis. More recently, Respawn also served as the co-developer on Star Wars: Zero Company.
EA has yet to offer any information about the game’s development status, so it’s unclear how much longer fans will have to wait for a full announcement. Since Battlefront 2 updates concluded in 2020, there have been multiple Star Wars shows released on streaming, including Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Maul — Shadow Lord. Battlefront 3 could pull content from any of these shows, as well as movies like The Mandalorian and Grogu and 2027’s Star Wars: Starfighter.
Though the potential of Star Wars Battlefront 3 should excite fans, the announcement comes at a bittersweet moment. EA also confirmed the closure of BioWare, the studio responsible for Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic. The closure of BioWare should have no impact on The Old Republic‘s continuation, as development of the game shifted to Broadsword Online Games in 2023, but the studio had a massive impact on the legacy of Star Wars.
Star Wars fans have been treated to multiple critically-acclaimed games in 2026, thanks to EA’s Zero Company and Galactic Racer. A new Battlefront would continue that trend, and EA should have more for fans to look forward to in the future. Rumors suggest that the third entry in Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi series will be released in 2027, though nothing has been officially announced at this time. Outside of EA, a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic is currently in the works by multiple BioWare veterans. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic does not have a release window, but the developers want to have the game released before 2030.
