Electronic Arts is commemorating N7 Day mere weeks after shutting down Mass Effect developer BioWare. The publisher’s efforts to promote merchandise based on the franchise have drawn fierce criticism from vocal Mass Effect fans, many of whom have taken to social media to condemn the move as being in poor taste.
EA officially announced the decision to cancel Mass Effect 5 and shut down BioWare in late October 2026. The move sparked widespread online criticism and spawned several fan-led campaigns urging the publisher to reconsider giving up on the iconic sci-fi franchise, none of which have yielded results as of early November. Meanwhile, it is business as usual at the BioWare Gear Store. Not only does the site continue to sell a variety of Mass Effect merchandise, but it has also introduced new products since the announcement of the studio’s closure.
N7 Day Merch Is Live on BioWare Gear Store
The latest wave of such products materialized just ahead of N7 Day 2026 on November 7. The business-as-usual rollout is likely explained by the fact that EA does not directly operate the BioWare Gear Store. Instead, the publisher licenses the relevant merchandising rights to DPI Merchandising, a wholesale and manufacturing company based in Novato, California. The terms of their agreement are unclear, although the effective demise of the Mass Effect franchise raises questions about how much longer the licensing arrangement will remain in place.

Mass Effect Fans Are Finding N7 Day 2026 Merch Drop in Poor Taste
In the meantime, a vocal section of the Mass Effect fandom is less than amused with the new wave of merch. “So they kill the game, and then try to sell us physical merch,” one disgruntled fan wrote on Reddit, with another person characterizing the move as “such a bad look.” Both remarks ranked among the five most-upvoted comments in the 2026 N7 Day megathread on the largest Mass Effect subreddit, which averages nearly 700,000 weekly visitors, according to Reddit’s publicly shared data.
So they kill the game, and then try to sell us physical merch.
Similar criticism has also surfaced on YouTube. For example, the top comment under DPI Merchandising’s trailer for its new wearable replica of the Mass Effect N7 Helmet as of November 7 asks rhetorically, “EA Shuts down Bioware, then asks us to give the Saudis and Kushner money?” The remark references two of EA’s new owners: Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Affinity Partners, a Florida-based investment firm founded by Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and a former government official whom the White House currently describes as a private citizen providing voluntary diplomatic services without compensation.
Efforts to pressure EA into reviving Mass Effect are continuing, although the most prominent campaigns appear to be losing momentum. The high-profile #SaveMassEffect petition recently surpassed 300,000 signatures, taking roughly two weeks to gain its latest 100,000 supporters after reaching 200,000 in just three days. EA has shown no signs of reconsidering its decision in response to the backlash. Instead, company officials have repeatedly framed BioWare’s closure as part of broader efforts to adapt to changing market conditions and maintain a sustainable business. Some fans remain hopeful that the publisher might at least sell the Mass Effect IP to a company interested in continuing the series, but there is currently no indication that such a deal is on the horizon or even being considered.
