An early build of Mirror’s Edge reveals a cringe beginning
Softsoundd on YouTube recently put in the work to make an early PS3 version of the cult-hit game from nine months before its release in 2008 playable (via Eurogamer). “After extensive reverse engineering and hundreds of fixes, including repairing the broken EBOOT fSELF format, stubbing 306 corrupted functions, and resolving Unreal Engine package bugs, the build is finally playable!” they explained.
It’s an uglier version of the game and there’s not a ton of special stuff going on here. But it does feature a storm drain time trial that’s not in the retail release and a more chatty Faith at the start of the game. Instead of the confident silence she exudes in the full game, here Faith explains the world of Mirror’s Edge like a forgotten ’90s sci-fi gem. “In this city of mirrors, the edge is where you still have a choice.” I love it.
