The Elder Scrolls Online was hit hard in Xbox’s recent mass layoffs. While the MMORPG will continue getting updates, ZeniMax Online Studios lost a number of developers, including key studio leadership. As fans had feared, those cuts are now also leading to major changes in the game’s originally promised roadmap for new content. An overhaul to the Warden class that fans have long begged for will now arrive in 2027. It’s one of a handful of anticipated features that’s been delayed as a result of the layoffs.
“We know it’s disappointing to see some features move out, and believe me, we want to get these into your hands as soon as possible, too,” wrote game director Nick Giacomini in a new blog post on July 30. “But we believe this is the right move for the long-term health of the game.” There are three main things originally planned for 2026 that have now been pushed back. The first is the new Crimson Veldt trial, a PvE endgame activity. The second is a much-needed Class and Combat refresh. The third is Update 52, now planned for January 2027, which launches a PvP zone and the Rimegales Skyrim Dynamic Encounters.
While Giacomini acknowledged “a number of organizational changes and departures of teammates” that had occurred at ZeniMax Online Studios earlier this month, the director and now studio head tried to suggest the new delays were due to quality issues rather than a loss of resources due to layoffs by Xbox. “Instead of rushing to hit a previously announced deadline, we are giving our teams the runway they need to do things right,” he wrote. “Some of our upcoming additions, like the Class and Combat Refresh and our new Trial, are highly complex, and we want to ensure they hit the mark before we put them in your hands.”
But players who were already skeptical of the MMORPG’s new shift to a seasonal model rather than one focused on shipping major expansions remain frustrated. “I expected drip feed but this is brutal,” wrote one fan on the subreddit. “Admittedly disappointing but we all sort of knew there would be consequences of this kind due to the layoffs,” wrote another. A major pain point is a stagnating meta. Players hoped a refresh to the Warden class sooner rather than later would help shake things up.
“It is high on the list of things we are actively working on,” community manager Kevin Gbolie wrote in response. “However we now need the extra time to make sure we are delivering the quality product you deserve.” He noted that the team is looking at a way of shipping a smaller class overhaul to help players out in the meantime, though nothing’s been confirmed yet. Despite high-profile cuts to the studio, including its leadership team, the team has stressed that it’s still the same size it was when shipping ESO‘s acclaimed Wrothgar and Summerset expansions.
Bethesda also recently announced that it would be coordinating more closely with ZeniMax Online on upcoming TES content, including The Elder Scrolls VI, leading to speculation that it is now essentially a support studio. Giacomini pushed back on that framing. “We’ve had bumps in the road over our 12-year history that we’ve always faced together,” he wrote today. “As our studio evolves, we are not looking to just ‘maintain’ the game. We are looking to grow it. You, our community, are the reason we have grown over the years, and we want to keep growing with you.”
