Enshrouded’s 1.0 Release Is Putting Steam’s Early Access Promise on Trial

Enshrouded’s 1.0 Release Is Putting Steam’s Early Access Promise on Trial

Whether players like it or not, it’s now clear that Steam Early Access has become a pretty convenient arrangement for some developers. It is just oh so marvelous to release an unfinished game but still charge people while continuing to work on it without having to commit to a release date. Steam’s Early Access program was designed specifically to allow devs to work on their projects while involving the players in the process. This is not an inherently evil idea, and Enshrouded is a good example of why, but when the development process seems to have no end in sight, the situation can become quite sticky.

Thankfully, Enshrouded is one of the games that will remind people what Early Access is supposed to look like. It entered the program on January 24, 2024, and is now scheduled to reach version 1.0 on October 15, 2026. Sure, that’s almost three years of development, but this is nothing unusual when it comes to game development. Moreover, the fact that Keen Games has committed to a specific release date already sets it apart from games that seem perfectly content to remain in Early Access indefinitely.

New Steam Feature Is a Game-Changer for Early Access Games

Steam launches a new feature that is a potential game-changer for early access titles, and likely to be welcomed by developers and players alike.

It’s no secret that when Enshrouded first entered the Early Access program, Keen Games had some pretty ambitious plans. The studio wanted to add new biomes to the world, introduce more enemies, and even give players more crafting materials and equipment. Of course, these are all very important in a survival RPG, especially one that is in its early stages of development, but the studio also made it clear that it wanted the players to have a say in what happens. More specifically, people were strongly encouraged to share their opinions on Discord, Steam Forums, and the in-game feedback system.

This means that Keen Games actually used the game’s Early Access stage as an opportunity to deliver a better title at the end, instead of simply charging people indefinitely. Then, on June 25, 2026, the studio announced the release date for version 1.0, and here we are. It’s rare to see a game developer commit to a concrete release date, especially when remaining in Early Access indefinitely is always an option. After all, we’ve all witnessed games like 7 Days to Die, which spent more than a decade in Early Access before finally reaching version 1.0.

A Release Date Alone Won’t Make Enshrouded a Finished Game

Announcing a release date and sticking to it is cool and all, but players are all too well aware that this is only half of the job. After all, there’s not much point in removing the Early Access tag if the game still feels unfinished. Thankfully, it seems like Keen Games is fully aware of this fact. In August 2026, the studio discussed its ongoing preparations for version 1.0, including work on existing mechanics and systems.

Enshrouded‘s full release is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

And although some people might prefer to get an overwhelming amount of new content instead, polishing what is already there may turn out to be equally important; if the game doesn’t run properly in the first place, then there’s almost no point in adding anything else. Ultimately, it seems like Keen Games is aiming to deliver a well-balanced 1.0 version, so it’s safe to say that the game’s biggest challenge might be making sure that everything feels polished enough to justify taking the game out of its Early Access phase.

Enshrouded Could Remind Developers What Early Access Is Actually For

It’s true that Enshrouded is just one game in a world where thousands of games are released every year, and maybe one title isn’t enough to make a significant change. However, it has certainly raised some interesting questions regarding the relationship between developers and players. According to Steam’s guidelines, Early Access is not supposed to be used simply as a way to fund development, and there’s no guarantee that these games will ever be finished at all. But just because players have been warned about the risks doesn’t mean that developers are free from responsibility.

The thing is, trust goes both ways. Of course, Enshrouded will probably not change the industry, but its upcoming full release could encourage other developers to take their own Early Access commitments more seriously. Even more importantly, this could change the way players approach Early Access as well and make them more willing to give smaller studios a chance. And considering how brutal the industry is to independent developers, this would most certainly be a welcome change.
