From the moment 4-year-old Cameron first stepped out into Glimmer in Spyro 2, he knew video games were going to play a central role in the rest of his life. Though he never planned to make it the focal point of his career, Cameron spent the vast majority of his spare time growing up playing games, and following graduation from the University of Reading, he thought he’d try his hand at writing a few reviews. Six years later, Cameron has reviewed countless games, written thousands of news and feature pieces, and interviewed a wide range of developers for GameRant.

Epic Games has just teased that Fortnite will be coming to Linux in the near future. While an exact release date hasn’t been confirmed just yet, Epic Games is planning to use Fortnite on Linux to test a new version of its Easy Anti-Cheat system.

One of the only ways to reliably play Fortnite on Linux right now is via Cloud streaming, either through Xbox Game Pass, GeForce Now, or a similar kind of service. Essentially, this is due to Epic Games’ Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) system, which the company has used since 2014. Without getting into the technical weeds of it all, Epic Games’ EAC system simply doesn’t offer enough protection from cheaters and hackers when implemented into a large-scale multiplayer game like Fortnite, at least according to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who stated as much on Twitter in 2022. But Epic Games is making some big changes to its Easy Anti-Cheat system.

A brand-new version of Epic Games’ Easy Anti-Cheat system has just been announced. Currently named ‘EAC Linux v2’, Epic Games will be using Fortnite as a guinea pig for this new anti-cheat system, using it to test the software in a live environment, refine the experience, and then eventually offer it to other multiplayer game developers once its effectiveness has been validated. Though an exact release date hasn’t been confirmed just yet, when Fortnite does arrive on Linux with this new EAC system, it’ll be available via the new Epic Games launcher, which has just become available in a Preview version.
