Epic Games Store Officially Reveals GTA-Like Game as Its January 22 Freebie

The Epic Games Store has officially announced Rustler as its free game for January 22. Valued at just under $25, this chaotic title inspired by classic GTA games is the seventh freebie that will be available to Epic Games Store users in January 2026.

Over the seven-day period beginning January 8, Epic was giving away the critically acclaimed tower defense game Bloons TD 6. That promotion has now been replaced with the storefront’s first dual-giveaway of 2026, centered on Cyanide’s two Styx games.

Epic Games Store: A Comprehensive List Of Every Free Game It’s Had To Date

Here’s a list of all the games that have been made free on the Epic Games Store. You have until January 22 to get the current free games.

Epic Games Store Is Giving Away Rustler Next Week

As soon as the Epic Games Store’s January 15 giveaway kicked off, the platform officially revealed the contents of its next promotion, which will center on Rustler. The chaotic open-world action game will be free to claim between January 22 and 29, beginning and ending at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET. This will be the first time Rustler has been offered for free on the Epic Games Store.

Epic Games Store Free Games Right Now

While its console versions are simply called Rustler, the PC original is advertised as Rustler – Grand Theft Horse. Like that alternative name suggests, the game takes a lot of inspiration from Rockstar’s classic GTA titles, offering an open-world environment with plenty of chances to wreak havoc from a top-down perspective, but with a twist of being set in medieval times. Its hectic gameplay is paired with humorous writing that prompted some reviewers to compare Rustler to an interactive Monty Python performance.

While waiting for the January 22 giveaway to arrive, Epic Games Store users are able to claim Styx: Master of Shadows and its sequel, Shards of Darkness. Developed by French studio Cyanide, both games are prequels to the 2012 action RPG Of Orcs and Men. They are mechanically much different from the original, having been envisioned as third-person stealth experiences rewarding patience and planning. While Epic originally announced the standard edition of Shards of Darkness as one of its January 15 freebies, it turns out that it’s giving away its content-complete Deluxe Edition.

The Epic Games Store’s current freebies serve as appetizers for Styx: Blades of Greed, Cyanide’s latest title that’s currently scheduled for release on February 19. The upcoming game still won’t reveal the outcome of the war between humans and the orc-goblin alliance established in Of Orcs and Men, as it’s another prequel, albeit one that takes place after Shards of Darkness. Blades of Greed promises an evolution of the stealth sandbox formula Cyanide has established in its prior two titles, offering three large environments for players to get lost in, with the game itself emphasizing exploration and improvisation. Compared to its predecessors, the game promises to deliver more infiltration route variety and optional content.

‘Dumb Ways to Die’ Is Epic’s Latest Mobile Freebie

In related news, Epic launched a new mobile freebie today: Dumb Ways to Die. Regularly priced at $4.99, the PlaySide-developed title can be claimed via the EGS mobile app until January 22. Staying true to the original premise of the popular public awareness campaign created by McCann, the mobile game presents a wide variety of “dumb ways to die” set to some exceedingly catchy tunes. The Android version of Dumb Ways to Die is claimable worldwide for Android users, while its iOS counterpart is only available in the European Union and Japan, as those are the currently only two markets with official access to alternative iOS app marketplaces.
