Epic Games Store Officially Reveals July 16 Free Games, Including a Nostalgic RPG

The Epic Games Store has officially revealed its free games for July 16: Luto and Echo Generation: Midnight Edition. Worth approximately $45 combined, the newly announced freebies will be available to claim on the Epic Games Store until July 23.

Developed by small Canadian indie studio Cococucumber, Echo Generation is a turn-based RPG about a group of kids investigating a small-town summer mystery. The game is built around exploration, quest-solving, party management, and active turn-based battles reminiscent of both Final Fantasy and Paper Mario. Its gameplay involves talking to locals, chasing clues, unlocking new paths, recruiting pet companions, collecting comic books that serve as combat upgrades, and fighting increasingly bizarre enemies. Although it is set in the 1990s rather than the ’80s, the overall premise of Echo Generation strongly evokes Stranger Things.

Luto and Echo Generation: Midnight Edition Debut as Epic’s Freebies Next Week

Echo Generation has now been announced as one of the Epic Games Store’s July 16 freebies, alongside Luto. Specifically, the storefront will be giving away the so-called Midnight Edition of the 2021 game. Released in June 2024, the enhanced version of Echo Generation adds fast travel, a quest journal, reworked combat balance, new status effects, camera tilt and zoom controls, upgraded visuals, broader controller support, and 12 additional language options, among other novelties. Echo Generation holds a “Strong” rating on OpenCritic, with a 77 average score based on 33 reviews that largely describe it as an excellent RPG with active time battles.

The other half of the July 16 giveaway, Luto, is a first-person psychological horror game from Spanish indie outlet Broken Bird Games. Released in July 2025, the game follows a character trapped inside their own home, turning the domestic space into a shifting maze of grief, anxiety, and unsettling reality distortions. Its core gameplay loop focuses on exploration, environmental puzzle-solving, clue-gathering, and narrative interpretation rather than combat. Mechanically, the game incorporates looping corridors, locked rooms, spatial tricks, sound cues, and surreal set pieces to challenge and unnerve players. In that respect, Luto has been described as a combination of P.T. and Amnesia.

Epic Games Store Free Games Right Now

Echo Generation and Luto are typically priced at $24.99 and $19.99, respectively. At $44.98, the July 16 promotion is just $5 below the value of the Epic Games Store’s ongoing giveaway centered on Nova Lands and Tattoo Tycoon.
