EverQuest Legends is Reimagining the Original Game, and You Can Play the Entire Thing Solo

Daybreak Games and Game Jawn have just announced EverQuest Legends, a solo and small-squad-friendly reimagining of the classic 1999 EverQuest MMORPG. The first EverQuest launched five years before World of Warcraft massively expanded the MMO niche, and served as a kind of trailblazer for many genre tropes that remain popular even today.

Over the years, EverQuest received more than 30 expansion packs that continued building upon the game in various ways, all the while maintaining its late-90s visual style. One of its key defining features, however, has always been reliance on group content to drive the endgame forward. A raid squad can consist of up to 72 players spread across several instances, with everyone working together to complete the given objective or down a particularly challenging boss. EverQuest Legends intends to deliver this same roster of content, but from a different perspective.

Everquest Legends Gives Players All the Original Content, Massively Rebalanced for Solo and Small Squad Play

EverQuest Legends is an upcoming rebalanced version of the classic MMORPG EverQuest with all of its content reworked for solo players and small, 8-player squads. The project is being spearheaded by the joint efforts of the original developer, now known as Daybreak Games, and indie studio Game Jawn, a newly formed operation consisting of people working on various EverQuest emulation projects, like the popular EQEmu community. EverQuest Legends isn’t looking to go toe-to-toe with 2026’s best and biggest MMO projects, but instead hopes to present classic EverQuest content as a viable option for casual play, potentially attracting a whole new player base along the way.

On top of rebalancing the entire EverQuest experience from the ground-up, Daybreak and Game Jawn are also introducing a host of quality-of-life and feature-level improvements to the game, all designed specifically to make solo and squad play viable. Players will be able to combine up to three character classes at once, for example, massively expanding their characters’ flexibility and power. EverQuest Legends will retain the original art style, graphics, and content, but introduce a streamlined UI and ability management, and various quality-of-life improvements. It’s not impossible that EverQuest Legends might end up being one of the better co-op multiplayer RPG options once it’s finally out, given the scope of the original game.

EverQuest Legends is now accepting closed beta sign-ups with plans to have it go live in April 2026. The game’s full launch, on the other hand, is due for July if all goes well. It’s going to be particularly interesting to see whether EverQuest Legends will be able to pull in fresh audiences and compare its performance to that of Old School RuneScape‘s recent successes. It’s a different kind of project, but comparable still, and both titles play on the players’ desire to experience nostalgic, retro MMORPG content in a new light.

It’s curious to note that EverQuest Legends isn’t the only project looking to bring the magic of the late ’90s MMORPG craze to solo players. Burgee Media’s single-player “MMORPG” Erenshor is trying to do something very similar in a slightly different way, whereas it won’t support any kind of multi-player whatsoever. EverQuest Legends should, in comparison, cater to a more substantial audience, but the specifics of its appeal and the extent of its reworks won’t be obvious until the upcoming closed beta kicks off.
