Everything Officially Confirmed About Diablo 5

BlizzCon 2026 kicked off with a bang this year, as Blizzard officially announced that Diablo 5 was in full development. It has now been three years since Diablo 4 hit the scene, and even though the wait for the next series chapter will require take some time, Blizzard has already offered a few compelling pieces of information regarding Diablo 5.

5 Things Diablo 2 Does Way Better Than Diablo 4

Diablo 2 vs Diablo 4: Which ARPG Reigns Supreme? Find out 5 key areas where D2 outshines its successor in mechanics, character building, and more.

Since the game is still several years from coming out, Blizzard hasn’t revealed every single Diablo 5 detail, but enough has been confirmed to paint a fascinating picture of what the fifth mainline entry has in store. The Diablo 5 announcement was undoubtedly one of the biggest moments at BlizzCon 2026, and the wait starts now.

Blizzard Has Already Confirmed Diablo 5’s Release Window

A Test of Patience

Diablo fans already have a release window to look forward to, but the downside is that Diablo 5 won’t be ready until at least Spring 2029. The good news is that having a general launch target lined up is better than having no release window information at all. The past few years have been heavily defined by exciting game announcements that take forever to have an official release window attached to the project. After all, The Elder Scrolls 6‘s release date is still being kept under wraps, and that was announced all the way back in 2018.

Even though Diablo 5 is three years away at the earliest, Blizzard will continue to bring seasonal updates to Diablo 4 while 2029 draws closer. According to Blizzard, there aren’t any other major expansions planned for Diablo 4, but the regular updates will pad out the overarching story ahead of Diablo 5‘s release.

What makes Diablo 5‘s 2029 window that much more intriguing is its platform release plans. Rumors and speculation about when the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles could come out have been swirling around for well over a year now, with some even claiming that the PS6 and the Xbox Project Helix might launch as soon as 2027 or 2028. Also, the recent Diablo 4 Switch 2 port release opens the door for Diablo 5 to come to the Nintendo console on day one.

Diablo 5’s Story and Setting Tease a Bleak World

Sanctuary Has Fallen

Diablo 5 is bringing players back to a procedurally generated Sanctuary, but this time around, the world of humans has already fallen to the powers of the titular villain. The apocalypse is alive and well, and it promises a setting that is bound to be met with an equally dark story. Humanity is hanging on by a thread, and the Lord of Terror’s ultimate goal of taking over the Heavens is getting closer to being achieved.

That’s where the main protagonist comes in. Diablo 5‘s main character is the Heir to Westmarch and harbors their own mysterious backstory. The protagonist boasts an undisclosed connection to Diablo, which makes them a threat to his reign, but also open to his influence.

Diablo 5‘s story also takes place 100 years after the events of Diablo 4, further demonstrating just how much has changed between entries. It’s going to be fascinating to see if the next few years of Diablo 4‘s seasonal updates are going to start planting the narrative breadcrumbs that lead to the events that make Sanctuary’s fall possible in Diablo 5.

Players Already Have Three Confirmed Classes to Look Forward To

Two Returning and One New

  • Plague Knight classImage via Blizzard

There have been plenty of great character options throughout the Diablo series, and many longtime fans will be excited to learn that the Demon Hunter and Monk are returning. The Diablo 5 classes don’t stop there, though. A newcomer known as the Plague Knight will also be joining the fight to restore Sanctuary to its former glory.

  • Demon Hunter: This class returns with its signature crossbows, swift movement, and Shadow Magic, making it a perfect option for ranged attacks.
  • Monk: Melee-focused martial arts strength and the ability to call down divine power for assistance make this class a fist-fighting powerhouse.
  • Plague Knight: Described by Blizzard as “the embodiment of walking death,” this class uses disease and pestilence as fuel for its powers while also spreading sickness across the battlefield.

Blizzard has confirmed that this trio is only the first round of classes that Diablo 5 will have in its launch roster. Diablo 4 featured five classes at launch, so it remains to be seen if this next chapter follows suit or expands the number of classes available when the game first releases.

Deeper Gameplay Details Remain Sparse, But Blizzard Has Offered a Few Sneak Peeks

Embracing the Past While Looking to the Future

Fans of Diablo 2‘s itemization will be happy to know that Blizzard is using this as a direct inspiration when it comes to Diablo 5‘s gameplay. Blizzard’s official statement about this feature in Diablo 5 confirmed that the team’s main goal is to create items that feel “readable, memorable, and worth chasing across hundreds of hours.”

Beyond that, Diablo 5 continues to emphasize gear-based sets. The team working on this new chapter has been heavily inspired by Diablo 4‘s Lord of Hatred DLC and Diablo 2‘s Runes and Runewords. A deeper crafting system is already being hinted by Blizzard, so future updates will hopefully reveal more details about how exactly Diablo 5 is going to achieve this.

Diablo: 17 Strongest Demons, Ranked

The Diablo franchise has no shortage of powerful demons. These are the most powerful of the bunch.

Looking to the past for inspiration is intriguing enough in its own right, but Diablo 5 is already shaking things up in a few key ways. Because of Sanctuary’s fractured state, the protagonist is forced into a more nomadic life that requires them to build a caravan made up of allies to help survive the treacherous world. Strongholds and towns are no longer part of the equation, meaning players will encounter a variety of fellow survivors with their own fascinating backstories.

Survive Diablo 5’s Sanctuary Solo or With Friends

Co-Op Is Here to Stay

Last but not least, Diablo 5 continues the franchise’s tradition of embracing both solo and co-op play. Granted, this isn’t a huge surprise, but as the years pass, how Blizzard chooses to approach Diablo 5‘s multiplayer is going to be a question that many fans will be eager to have answered.

Between the story turning parties into caravans and taking town hubs out of the formula, Diablo 5‘s version of co-op could feel quite different than Diablo 4‘s multiplayer gameplay. Another key difference is that Diablo 5 is embracing procedural generation. The majority of Diablo 4‘s map was hand-crafted, which allowed random players to cross paths organically. This gave Diablo 4 some light MMO qualities, but Diablo 5‘s generated world will potentially do away with that.

Since Diablo 5 is still early in production, only time will tell, but Blizzard has already revealed a lot of interesting features that are bound to make the next three years deeply intriguing for a lot of Diablo lovers. There’s no telling when Blizzard plans to drop more details, but BlizzCon 2026 has given Diablo 5 a strong start.
