Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s lead writer says she can’t comment on the possibility of a sequel. The turn-based RPG was one of the biggest success stories of 2025, with Sandfall Interactive’s debut title receiving widespread praise from both players and critics and dominating awards season. Now, as eyes turn to the future, some are clamoring for a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sequel, but Sandfall is remaining coy about when or if fans can expect one.
Demand is certainly not an issue for a potential sequel. In addition to becoming a smash hit among players, Expedition 33 secured 436 Game of the Year awards, breaking Elden Ring‘s record for the most GOTY wins by a single game. As can be expected of anything that popular, the game was not free of controversy, with its use of AI and status as an “indie” title drawing some skepticism, but overall, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 saw a historic run in 2025. Whether Sandfall will follow up on that success with another game in the same universe, however, is less clear.
When asked if Clair Obscur would turn into a multi-game franchise, Lead Writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen told GamesRadar+ “If I told you, I’d have to kill you.” Fans have already pointed out that there are plenty of things a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sequel could improve or expand on, and the unique world of the game leaves plenty of room for new stories, but Svedberg-Yen insisted she couldn’t comment on the idea one way or another. While she also said she “would love to tell people” where Sandfall Interactive will go next, the writer wouldn’t offer anything apart from doubling down on her need for secrecy.
Some fans may take Svedberg-Yen’s refusal to comment as evidence that there are plans for another game in the series, as there would be little need to be coy if a sequel was completely off the table. In a 2025 interview, Sandfall CEO and Creative Director Guillaume Broche also said Clair Obscur is a franchise name and even went as far as to say Expedition 33 was just one of the stories the studio wanted to tell in that universe. Those comments seem at odds with Svedberg-Yen’s silence, but it could be that Sandfall plans on expanding the franchise but is hiding whether that will mean a direct sequel or a spin-off. The timing of any future Clair Obscur games is also a mystery, and plans are liable to change as the years go by.
Regardless of what a future Clair Obscur game might look like, it won’t likely be the next thing to come from the studio. Broche has confirmed that Sandfall Interactive has already begun work on its next game, but details are slim beyond it being “very unique and artsy.” Given Sandfall’s size and how recently Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released, the next game is likely early in development and could take some time to come out. Fans shouldn’t hold their breath for any major updates for now, which could make the wait for another Clair Obscur title, sequel or otherwise, all the more agonizing.

Despite its early success, Sandfall has expressed that it does not want to capitalize on its rise to fame by scaling up. According to Broche, the Expedition 33 studio’s limits help it be the best version of itself, leading to the kinds of creativity that made its debut title such a standout. Only time will tell if that approach pays off again, whether that’s in a new Clair Obscur title or something else entirely.
