Expedition 33’s win at The Game Awards

Expedition 33’s win at The Game Awards

It’s not uncommon for those within the gaming industry to congratulate one another on major successes, which is exactly what began to happen immediately after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took home Game of the Year at The Game Awards, but this time even Major League Baseball decided to join the celebration surrounding Sandfall Interactive’s debut title. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was originally released on April 24, 2025, and is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The Game Awards is one of the biggest nights of the year for gaming, as players are often treated to a wide variety of flashy trailers, announcements, release dates, shadow drops, and, of course, the awards themselves. While there were a lot of winners at The Games Awards, one title stood out from the rest: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Nominated for twelve awards going into the night, the hit RPG walked away with nine trophies in total. Three of the game’s nominations were even in the same category, with Ben Starr, Jennifer English, and Charlie Cox all being considered for Best Performance. Of the talented actors, Jennifer English was the one who ultimately took home the award, beating out not only her co-stars, but also Troy Baker, Erika Ishii, and Konatsu Kato. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 also took home the biggest prize of the evening, the coveted Game of the Year award.

The Loudest Part of Neil Druckmann’s TGA Acceptance Speech Was What He Didn’t Say

Season 2 of The Last of Us was a winner at The Game Awards, but someone was notably left out of Neil Druckmann’s acceptance speech.

Even the MLB Loves Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

In a recent post on Twitter, the official account for Major League Baseball shared an image of a player sporting a uniform with the number 33 on their back. Accompanying the image was a simple message that read “for those who come after,” with a hashtag for The Game Awards. “For those who come after” is a quote that comes up quite often in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, signifying the importance of the mission the characters are on and how everything is done in service of future expeditions. While it’s common for those within the gaming industry to share in the success of their peers, seeing a celebratory post for a video game come from a major sports account is less typical. However, it speaks to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s historic night, taking home nine of the twelve awards it was nominated for.

The success of Sandfall Interactive’s debut title hasn’t been limited to The Game Awards by any means, as it has consistently received high praise throughout the year. Over the summer, The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann finished playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and said he was “in awe.” Baldur’s Gate 3 Performance Director Greg Lidstone even described Expedition 33 as “beautiful” and claimed it was a “game that knows what it is and leans into that.” With such high praise coming from those within the industry, perhaps it’s not such a surprise that others outside the world of video games have begun to take notice as well.

While it would have been easy for Sandfall Interactive to accept all of its awards and simply go home, it seems as if the developers had a surprise for players. After winning Game of the Year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 shadow dropped a major update for the title, giving fans a whole new reason to jump into the beloved RPG. Gamers who boot up the title may notice that a new dungeon location has been added. The developers also introduced new boss encounters, which are meant to provide a challenge to players in the late stages of the game. Players will even gain access to more costumes, weapons, and customization options for various characters. Many fans have expressed excitement about the sudden appearance of new content, praising the developers for giving them another way to celebrate the title’s success. While there’s no way of knowing what Sandfall Interactive will do in the future, many fans have high expectations and are eagerly waiting to find out what’s next for the studio.
