Fable Combat Clip Goes Viral For Looking Bad, But There’s More To It

Fable Combat Clip Goes Viral For Looking Bad, But There’s More To It

A short gameplay clip from the upcoming Fable reboot, set to launch early next year on Xbox, PC, and PS5, is going viral, but not in a way developer Playground Games likely intended. A short video of the main character swinging a sword at a big enemy and getting little reaction from the baddie is being spread around online as proof that the game’s combat is terrible. But, as is often the case with these types of viral posts, the truth isn’t quite that simple.

On August 26, as part of Gamescom, Xbox released a new gameplay video of Fable. In the nearly 20-minute-long gameplay video, we see the game’s hero going on a quest, exploring the world of Albion, and fighting some enemies. But one 60-second moment from this long video is being spread around on places like Reddit and Twitter.

On Twitter, the video was shared with the caption “Fable’s combat” followed by a suspicious-looking emoji face. The video has racked up nearly 3 million views in the last 24 hours and seems to show the main character attacking an enemy over and over again, with the enemy barely reacting to their sword and seemingly having a ton of health, making the fight look like a boring slog. This same clip also blew up on Reddit with over 5k upvotes and a lot of negative comments. Things got so bad that some users tried sharing longer clips of combat to show that, actually, Fable’s combat isn’t as bad as the viral clip implies.

And there’s no denying that the clip above doesn’t look great. However, there’s some missing context here that is also important. For one, this isn’t a random enemy, but instead a mini-boss that has more health than normal and is intended to be very tough. It should also be noted that the game is set to a higher, more challenging difficulty in the gameplay video released by Xbox yesterday. That might explain why this tough mini-boss has so much health. Also, the clip going viral is running at a slower, less stable framerate than the gameplay seen in the full video posted by Xbox.

The viral clip also cuts out the hero fighting smaller, weaker enemies before this big boss. And that combat looks much better, with enemies reacting to various attacks and moves and going down after a few quick hits. You can see all that below:

Now, to be clear: I still think that even running at normal speed, the boss fight gameplay seen in that new Fable video from Xbox looks bad. A boss should still react to hits more than that enemy appears to be, and I do think he has too much health for how simple his moveset seems to be. That said, this is clearly not how combat in the Fable reboot will look and play across the board. There’s other footage out there that shows more diverse moves, enemies that react more noticeably, and faster, better-flowing action than what’s on display in that 60-second viral clip.

This is a good reminder that a lot of social media and online content is now built around engagement, and the best way to get people engaging with your stuff is to make them mad or share something extremely negative and bad. And while it is possible the combat in Fable will be terrible, a 60-second clip devoid of context and running at a lower FPS than intended isn’t going to tell us anything useful about the game. It won’t be until reviewers and players get their hands on Fable in February of next year that we’ll figure out if combat is a blast or a slog.

Until then, don’t let random social media posts convince you a game is bad or good based on one clip.
