Fable Players Are Already Proving Playground Right About the Open-World RPG’s Length

Fable Players Are Already Proving Playground Right About the Open-World RPG’s Length

As a massive fan of Fable who has been here since the franchise’s humble beginnings on the original Xbox in 2004, when I heard about how long Playground Games’ upcoming reboot would be, I wasn’t bothered in the slightest. This is largely due to the fact that pretty much every game in the series has fallen around the same 30–40 hour completionist mark that Playground has confirmed for the reboot, so there really shouldn’t be any fuss about it. But alas, it’s 2026, and modern open-world RPG fans want more bang for their buck. I guess I can understand it somewhat, as there are plenty of other games in the genre that treat 30–40 hours as a baseline. However, Fable has never been lengthy from the standpoint of pure content, as it was designed, from the beginning, with the idea of offering players a sort of “second-life” fantasy in mind—and that’s something that can last for as long, or as short, as the player wants it to.

What’s interesting, though, is that, despite the discourse surrounding Fable‘s length (primarily coming from newcomers to the series), those who plan to play the upcoming open-world RPG are actually proving Playground Games right in its approach to the game’s length. Speaking at Gamescom 2026 during a Q&A panel (via Polygon), the developer confirmed that, while the mainline quest can be completed within 15–20 hours, and the hard side content can double that length, the game is designed to be played “as long as you want.” This infinite amount of play is rooted in Fable‘s iconic life systems, just as it has always been, and based on the comments below a fairly recent post on the game’s official X account, that’s actually exactly how most of the game’s players plan to play it.

Fable’s Story Length Praised by Gamers

With newly revealed information about Fable’s story length, fans have shared their thoughts with largely positive responses to the announcement.

Fable Players Are Already Showing Why 30–40 Hours Might Not Matter

Going all the way back to the original Fable, the series has always encouraged players to have some kind of life outside of being a Hero. The first game let players buy and rent out property, get married, customize their appearance, spend time playing pub games, and generally waste plenty of hours doing things that had absolutely nothing to do with the main story. Fable 2 took that considerably further with jobs, children, businesses, a much larger property system, and an economy that made becoming a landlord one of the easiest ways to get filthy rich. Fable 3 carried much of that forward, even letting players manage property and businesses from the world map while putting wealth itself at the heart of some of the game’s biggest decisions. In other words, living in Albion has almost always mattered just as much as saving it.

Console in One

Put the consoles in the correct order.

Playground Games seems to have taken that idea and blown it up for the reboot. Fable‘s new Living Population system consists of more than 1,000 NPCs, each with their own personality, home, job, and daily schedule, and every one of them can be affected by the player’s actions. Players can buy an NPC’s home and become their landlord, buy the business they work at and become their employer, then control both their wages and their rent. If those wages aren’t enough to cover what you’re charging them to live there, they can apparently be forced to move out. NPCs can also remember things the player has done for or against them, while relationships can lead to dating, marriage, children, and all the usual Fable nonsense that comes with trying to build a life in Albion. Again, Playground has even said players could theoretically tinker with this Living Population “forever.”

Fable Players Are Already Treating Its Life Sim Loop Like the Main Attraction

Where things get very interesting is that Fable recently asked players on X what they planned to spend their gold on once their heroic aspirations inevitably gave way to checking rental income and evaluating property investments. Playground even encouraged “morally grey answers,” and, unsurprisingly, plenty of people took that invitation and ran with it. What surprised me wasn’t necessarily how morally questionable some of those plans were, though, because I expected that. Rather, it was just how many players immediately gravitated toward Fable‘s life systems in the first place.

Of the 43 replies in the sample I looked at that actually answered the question being asked, 33 of them, or roughly 77% of those players, pointed toward Fable‘s life-sim or sandbox side in some capacity as their primary goal. Now, obviously, that’s a small sample, and a post about rental income and property investments is naturally going to steer some of the conversation in that direction. I’m certainly not suggesting 77% of everyone who buys Fable is going to spend more time playing landlord than Hero. Still, when more than three-quarters of the people actually answering the question are talking about spending their gold on things that have nothing to do with being a Hero in Albion, one starts to wonder why there was ever any discourse about Fable‘s length in the first place.

This sample only includes direct replies to Fable‘s post that clearly answered the question being asked. Replies that were jokes, reactions, unrelated comments, or otherwise didn’t indicate what the player planned to spend their gold on were excluded.

Some of those players aren’t even hiding what their priorities are. User @damandarr_fit, for example, said they expect to “end up in the life sim black hole” and possibly forget there’s a main storyline to continue. User @trentreed27 said they’ll obviously be buying more properties so they can raise the rent, while user @Dansgaming plans to “cripple the economy” by buying every property and charging ridiculous rent. Then there’s user @Aidanlancaster1, who has already figured out an entire scheme involving employing a homeless NPC, renting them a house, taking their wages back through rent, and then eventually firing and evicting them. Playground even replied to that one by calling it “the never-ending cycle.”

Fable’s ‘Short’ Length Starts Looking a Little Ironic

But again, that’s where the discourse about Fable being too short starts becoming a little ironic to me. Playground has confirmed around 15–20 hours of mainline quest content and another 15–20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration, which understandably doesn’t sound enormous when there are modern open-world RPGs capable of swallowing 80, 100, or even more hours. But Playground also made a very specific distinction when giving those numbers. Associate game director Will Kennedy said the life systems are “limitless,” while Craig Littler went as far as saying players can “literally play it forever” if that’s what they want to do.

Of the 43 replies in the sample I looked at that actually answered the question being asked, 33 of them, or roughly 77% of those players, pointed toward Fable‘s life-sim or sandbox side in some capacity as their primary goal.

Yet here we have a sample of prospective players, the majority of whom appear to be looking forward to engaging with precisely that limitless, life-sim portion of the game. They’re not talking about how quickly they can get through the main quest or whether there are enough side missions to justify the price. They’re planning rental empires, businesses, relationships, outfits, homes, and all sorts of ways to mess with the people of Albion. One player is already worried they’ll forget the story even exists.

That’s why I still can’t bring myself to worry much about Fable being “only” 30–40 hours long from the standpoint of its finite content. Playground isn’t really selling that as the limit of the experience in the first place. Those hours are just the part of Fable that eventually runs out. The rest is designed around giving players a world they might simply want to keep living in, and if this admittedly small sample is anything to go by, a lot of them are already planning to do exactly that.
