Fable Switch 2 Version is ‘Under Consideration’

Fable Switch 2 Version is ‘Under Consideration’

A Nintendo Switch 2 version of Fable is “under consideration,” a longtime Microsoft insider has said. However, as things currently stand, the Switch 2 is likely to receive multiple additional Xbox games before the upcoming open-world RPG has a realistic chance of reaching it.

The Fable reboot has been in the works at Forza Horizon developer Playground Games since around 2018. Eidos-Montreal later joined the project as a support studio. During the January 22 Xbox Developer Direct, Playground shared the first look at Fable‘s gameplay and committed to a fall 2026 release window for the RPG. The event also yielded the final confirmation of the game’s launch platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

7 Big Nintendo Switch 2 Sequels You Didn’t Know Were Coming In 2026

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to have a big 2026, and these sequels should go a long way in making that happen.

Fable Switch 2 Port Is Still a Possibility, Insider Claims

While Fable is skipping the Switch 2 at launch, Nintendo’s hybrid console could still receive it eventually, according to Jez Corden. Taking to Twitter immediately after the January 22 showcase, the Microsoft insider reported that a Switch 2 version of the game is “under consideration for the future.” A separate comment saw him cite “logistics” as the primary reason a Switch 2 port supposedly isn’t in development at the moment. He concluded this train of thought on an optimistic note, saying, “I think it’ll happen.”

Nintendo consoles have received a handful of first-party Xbox games since Microsoft started embracing multi-platform publishing in early 2024. Obsidian Entertainment’s Pentiment and Grounded were the first of the lot, arriving on the Switch in February and April 2024, respectively. They were followed by two day-one Switch releases: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 in July 2025, then the Heretic + Hexen remaster a month later. Shortly afterward, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer told Famitsu in a widely reported interview that Switch 2 can expect strong support from Xbox Game Studios going forward. A potential Fable port for Nintendo’s current-gen console would align with that pledge.

Switch 2 Already Has 2 Confirmed Xbox Games for 2026

Since then, Microsoft has already announced a Switch 2 version of South of Midnight, set to launch in spring 2026. Nintendo’s console is also planned to receive Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition later this year. However, the biggest Xbox Game Studios titles targeting 2026 debuts currently appear poised to skip the Switch 2 at launch. That includes all of the games showcased during the January 22 Developer Direct: Forza Horizon 6, Beast of Reincarnation, Kiln, and Fable itself.

The Technical Feasibility of Fable Switch 2 Version

Since the Switch 2 is less powerful than Sony and Microsoft’s current-gen consoles, a potential Fable port would ostensibly require some compromises to happen. Looking at online reactions to the January 22 Xbox Developer Direct, some fans expressed concerns about Fable‘s performance looking a bit rough, suggesting even much more powerful platforms than the Switch 2 could struggle to run it. While such conclusions might seem intuitive, technically ambitious projects in the vein of Fable often don’t come together on the performance side of things until very late into development.

With Fable still being around nine months away from release, there remains a realistic chance its day-one performance will significantly improve from what was shown during the Xbox Developer Direct. That likelihood is further supported by Playground Games’ strong track record with Xbox console optimization. Even its PC releases have been well-regarded, aside from its most recent title, Forza Horizon 5, which required some post-launch patches to meet the studio’s usual performance standards. Overall, while Fable appears to be a highly ambitious project in terms of both graphics and gameplay systems, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be too demanding for a Switch 2 port. At this stage, it is simply too early to draw definitive conclusions.
