Fable has received a new trailer that appears to tease the return of Jack of Blades. The latest Fable promo was shared at the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase.
Minor spoilers for the original Fable ahead.
Jack of Blades was the main antagonist of the first entry in the series, which hit the market in 2005. Fable‘s Jack of Blades lore is quite elaborate, but the gist of it is that Jack is an interdimensional being that grew to be quite ancient thanks to his magical mask, which allows him to take over bodies and essentially live forever. The latest game to feature him was the 2014 Fable Anniversary re-release.

Fable’s Xbox Games Showcase 2024 Trailer Seems to Feature Jack of Blades Cameo
The June 9 Xbox Games Showcase offered fans a new look at the upcoming RPG, the first in nearly a year. With a runtime of nearly three minutes, the promo had enough time to continue fleshing out the world of Albion, which it mostly did through gameplay footage backed by some whimsical narration by British actor Matt King of Peep Show fame. But the video also suggests that Jack of Blades will be making a return in the upcoming Fable game, as it ends with a scene that shows a glimpse of a familiar-looking figure standing in the heroes’ way.
The obscured character is shown wearing a crimson hood and wielding a staff, all the while being surrounded by an unsettling smoky red aura, all of which are associated with Jack of Blades. The teaser hence appears to offer a strong indication that the iconic villain will be making a return in the upcoming RPG. Since the next installment in the Fable franchise has long been touted as a reboot, the notion of Playground Games bringing back the original entry’s antagonist appears to be well within the realm of possibility.
Aside from teasing the RPG’s story and characters, the June 9 trailer also saw Playground Games attach a release window to the project, revealing that the reboot is presently targeting a 2025 launch. The game should hence hit the market some half a decade following the original Fable announcement. But the project is believed to have been in development for even longer than that, with initial reports pointing to its existence dating back to 2018. The Fable reboot is planned to launch for the Xbox Series X/S and PC. The RPG will also be a day-one Xbox Game Pass release.
