Facebook is Down Right Now [UPDATE]

Facebook is Down Right Now [UPDATE]

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

[UPDATE: Facebook appears to be stable once more. It’s entirely possible, and likely, that there are still isolated incidents around the world, but it is not as widespread as it initially was. Facebook users should be able to access the social media website again soon, if they cannot already.]

The hugely popular social media site Facebook is down right now, with users across other forms of social media reporting the outage online. In fact, the volume of traffic directed to Facebook’s Down Detector Page (to report issues) has crashed the site, which went down temporarily due to ongoing service issues.

While it is currently out as of this writing (and this article will be updated when services are restored), it’s worth mentioning that it is rare that the Meta-owned Facebook goes down at all. It has been months, if not a year+, since any similar issues have affected the social media website, but it’s always possible as anything on the internet is.

Steam Makes 5 Games 100% Free Until June 15, Plus a Bonus Open-World Game

Steam returns with yet another promotion, making an extensive list of games free to play for a limited time, with an open-world game also included.

Facebook is down right now, with no official word yet on what the problem is or when it will get fixed. It appears to be a Meta-wide issue with others reporting issues on Instagram and Threads as well. Facebook has not updated its accounts on other social media platforms to acknowledge the issue or reveal when services may be restored, and the severity of the outage required time to update after Down Detector crashed. It has since been restored, and as of 8:30 am CT, it appears there have been 40,000+ reports that have made it through the traffic crash on Down Detector.

Shortly thereafter, it peaked at around 120K reports before slowly dwindling down as it returned to live status slowly across the world. Down Detector, as of this latest update at around 10:45 am CT, is still showing around 4K issue reports with the website. That is much larger than the typical baseline (the basic number of issues at any given moment) of ~10, but it is a far cry from the widespread issues of its peak. Overall, it’s at the very least trending the right way, and full service should be restored soon.

Overall, it’s worth noting that Meta never outright addressed these issues—perhaps because of the relatively short period of its peak time. Of course, many would argue that some kind of announcement or post should be expected on other social media platforms, like Elon Musk’s Twitter, but it’s worth noting that Facebook has not been active there as Facebook since 2024. Meta is, but it rarely posts, sometimes sharing something just 1-3 times per month.
