Fallout 3 Remaster Gets Encouraging Update

Fallout 3 Remaster Gets Encouraging Update

The long-rumored Fallout 3 remaster is in active development right now, according to a new report. Bethesda has been radio-silent on the possibility of a Fallout 3 remaster, even with the massive success of the TV adaptation and lack of a new mainline game in the series. This latest report is an exciting update, although gamers will have to remain patient before they finally get their hands on the rumored title.

A Fallout 3 remaster has been rumored for years now, although nothing has ever come of it. But for a long time, much of that was borne out of fan desire to see it come to fruition, rather than any actual expectation that Bethesda would do it. Last year’s surprise shadow drop of Oblivion Remastered was a total game-changer, an acknowledgment that Bethesda was willing to go back and overhaul its older titles for modern hardware. It made huge graphical leaps forward, including some modern game mechanics such as sprint while retaining all the charm of the original Oblivion. Given that both Oblivion and Fallout 3 ran on the Gamebryo engine, a Fallout 3 remaster almost feels like the natural next step, using Oblivion Remastered as the blueprint for how to get it right.

10 Things That Happened Between Fallout 76 And Fallout 3

There are 175+ years between Fallout 76 and Fallout 3, and we’ll showcase the most important events that occurred between both Post-War games.

Fallout 3 Remaster in ‘Active Development’ According to Insider

The Verge’s Tom Warren recently released a report on Xbox’s plans for 2026, featuring some very exciting news for Fallout fans. According to Warren, the Fallout 3 remaster that gamers have been calling for is indeed in “active development,” although gamers won’t be getting their hands on it quite yet. Warren says that “Bethesda is keen to ensure it’s as well polished as the surprise release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered last year,” so it won’t be rushed out the door before it’s ready. This is great news – it has been almost 20 years since the original release of Fallout 3, so gamers have already waited a long time for a remaster. And while it would be great to have the game as soon as possible, equally, everyone wants it to be as good as Oblivion Remastered. If the wait has already lasted this long, it’s reasonable to wait until the remaster does the original game justice..

Warren’s report does not state which studio is tackling the development of the Fallout 3 remaster. Oblivion Remastered was developed by Virtuos with assistance from Bethesda Game Studios, and the experience of that effort would be invaluable in remastering Fallout 3. It would be fairly shocking if Virtuos was not the developer on Fallout 3, especially given the very positive critical reception of Oblivion Remastered.

Some gamers were left disappointed following the Season 2 finale of the Fallout TV adaptation. A mysterious Fallout countdown timer set to end post-finale had led many to believe that Bethesda was gearing up to shadow drop a Fallout 3 or New Vegas remaster, employing the same release strategy as Oblivion Remastered. Much of this was based on hope rather than solid evidence, making it unsurprising when the countdown led to a 3D location explorer for Mr. House’s penthouse. It may have been too soon for the Fallout 3 remaster on this occasion, but hopefully, its time will come.

Remasters aside, the wait goes on for a new mainline game in the Fallout series. The mainstream popularity garnered by the TV series puts Bethesda in an awkward spot. It feels as though the developer could be wasting the opportunity to bring more people to the games by not having a new release, but it is also too busy developing The Elder Scrolls 6 to commit to a full new Fallout project. This is where a potential Fallout 3 or New Vegas remaster could be perfect, reintroducing fans to the older games in the series while removing some of the more dated elements for a modern audience.
