Fallout 4 has officially released on Nintendo Switch 2, and Bethesda has confirmed that the latest port of its 2015 post-apocalyptic RPG features 40 and 60 FPS modes as well as the standard 30. Prior to its release, Bethesda never revealed whether Fallout 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 would include different FPS settings, so it’s a huge bonus that players can choose between framerate and graphical fidelity.
Over 10 years after its initial release, Fallout 4 was confirmed to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 during a recent Nintendo Direct. This release will be followed by two more Bethesda titles in the coming months, with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Oblivion Remastered also planned for a Switch 2 launch. It’s a credit to the game’s longevity, that Bethesda still sees Fallout 4 as being worthwhile to release on current-gen consoles after over a decade.
Todd Howard Reveals Why Fallout 76 is the Bethesda Game He’s ‘Most Proud of’
Todd Howard reveals the reasons why Fallout 76 is the release he is most proud of from his long game development history.
Fallout 4 on Switch 2 Has a 60 FPS Mode
Following Fallout 4‘s Nintendo Switch 2 release, Bethesda released a post on X confirming that the game has additional 40 and 60 FPS modes, which can be used instead of the base 30 FPS experience. This allows players to choose between performance and graphical fidelity, or opt for a happy medium between the two. When the port was first announced a few weeks ago, there was no mention of different FPS modes, so gamers picking up Fallout 4 on the Switch 2 have been left pleasantly surprised to find that they have the choice to optimize their experience to their own tastes. However, Fallout 4 players could choose between performance and quality mode in the next-gen update version released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2024, so it’s good to see that the Switch 2 is not being left behind in this regard.
Fans responding to Bethesda’s post on X were generally appreciative of the FPS setting choices that players have in Fallout 4 on Nintendo Switch 2. A thread on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit had a few more important details, with one user confirming that the 60 FPS mode is available in both docked and handheld. Others raised concerns about the visuals in 60 FPS mode; one comment claims that it’s “almost impossible to find Dogmeat in the wild due to lack of shadows.” Multiple users raise the 40 FPS option as a great compromise, complimenting how smooth it feels even compared to the standard 30 FPS. Ultimately, this will come down to personal preference, so players who buy the game on Switch 2 should try the different FPS settings until they find the one that works for them.
With Fallout 4 enjoying yet another re-release, many gamers continue to wonder when they can expect a new mainline title in the franchise. The success of the Prime Video adaptation has put Bethesda in a strange spot. The studio is currently working on The Elder Scrolls 6, but it also cannot ignore the massive moment Fallout is enjoying in the mainstream right now. And although the rumors of Fallout 3 Remastered continue to linger, Bethesda has not confirmed anything official at this point.
Fallout 4 is the latest in a string of huge third-party games coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. With its latest home console, Nintendo has focused a little more on third-party titles, making the Switch 2 a viable platform for gamers who want more than the classic Nintendo franchises such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Pokemon. Over the last year, big games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption have received Nintendo Switch 2 ports, while gamers can also expect other major titles like Resident Evil Requiem and 007 First Light to land on the platform at launch.
