Yesterday, Mojang held Minecraft Live, a stream serving up news about the seminal and unshakeable world building simulator. Featured was a closer look at the soon-releasing action RPG Minecraft Dungeons II and new icy biomes for future core game updates. What was far more startling was that after 14 years, Mojang is introducing a new dimension to the fold. The presentation had a quick glance at “the Sift,” a cotton candy colored realm that seems unlike any the game has officially offered before.
While many players spend the bulk of their time in the main Overworld, Minecraft features three parallel dimensions. First was the Nether in 2010, a fiery molten inferno. Then in 2011 Mojang introduced the End, an ominous void filled with some of Minecraft’s fiercest creatures. Each dimension features unique biomes, materials and tend to flip the usual laws of physics on their head.
For a while players didn’t expect anything to follow up a realm called “the End,” especially as years stretched into generations. The weekend’s stream suggested Mojang used the extended time to make a more thorough experience in the Sift than its single-note predecessors. So much fluffier and friendlier than the other alternative dimensions, occupied so far by pink weeds and a little blue bunny, fans are trying to extrapolate what to expect.

“I honestly think that the heaven dimension behind hidden behind a straight up horror challenge in the depths of the earth is the coolest design choice mojang could have ever made,” posts Minecraft fan harri. “The death cult city portal leading to cute pink heaven makes perfect sense and is incredible.”
The Sift’s appearance is a 180° from the dark, gloomy route many of Minecraft’s recent additions has taken. Some fans are enjoying the vicious contrast. The tempered palette seems far more aligned with alternative indies like Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor than Mojang’s usual in-house style.

Elsewhere, this departure is leaving fans more divided. Over on Reddit is a tennis match between players who find the new dimension off-putting, players who suggest keeping an open mind and elders who say this is an identical reaction to updates through the decade. “People are mostly afraid of change,” posts LaDestitute. “People made the same comments about the 1.16 nether forests years ago.”
While the Sift will be coming to the core game in 2027, it will actually make its debut in the Dungeons II spin-off first, giving players an early taste of its wider implications. It’s no secret how essential keeping Minecraft players is for Mojang and parent company Microsoft. Amid the collapse of Xbox, it came to light that the single game’s income has essentially been propping up the entire operation. As Xbox foots additional bills with one hand and folds studios with the other, it’s seemingly up to Minecraft to keep the lights on. It’s no wonder they decided the new dimension should be, perhaps, a little more illuminated.
