Final Direct For The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Has A Shocking Reveal Of Yoshi's Voice Actor

The next Mario movie comes to theaters on April 1, and you can get tickets for it now.

Today’s Nintendo Direct was all about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it included the release of the latest trailer for the animated film and some big cast announcements. Check it out below.

The main voice cast members of the film opened the Direct, wishing viewers a happy “Mario Day” (observed on March 10). The trailer opened with a sequence overtly inspired by the Mario Galaxy games, with Peach’s castle being lifted into space by Bowser Jr. Seen in the trailer was Wart, the Super Mario Bros. 2 villain, who is voiced by Luis Guzmán. Other newly revealed additions to the cast are Issa Rae as the Honey Queen and Childish Gambino himself, Donald Glover, as Yoshi.

The voice behind Mario’s dinosaur sidekick was the biggest question mark up until now, and it’s doubtful many had the Atlanta and Community star at the top of their list of guesses. Yoshi has demonstrated the ability to speak in video games, but as with other Mario characters, it’s never been a fully voiced role. It’ll certainly be a trip to hear the voice behind “Redbone” and “This is America” coming out of Yoshi.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto also appeared at the end of the Direct, thanking fans and saying that the upcoming movie is the “centerpiece” of the franchise’s 40th anniversary. Miyamoto also mentioned that numerous “nostalgic characters” show up in the film and challenged viewers to spot them when watching the full film.

Additionally, tickets for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are now on sale. What’s more, you can get a closer look at the Yoshi-themed popcorn bucket for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters on April 1, featuring Chris Pratt returning to voice Mario and Brie Larson joining as Rosalina. The film has big shoes to fill, as 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $1.36 billion globally and was the year’s No. 2 film, only behind Barbie.

The film also features Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returned from the first movie to direct The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The Super Mario Bros. Movie writer Matthew Fogel wrote the new one as well.

Beyond The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo has a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in the works with Sony Pictures set for release in 2027. After that, more movies may follow as part of Nintendo’s plan to have a steady cadence of new movie releases.
