Final Fantasy 11 Bug Has Forced Square Enix to Kill Bosses Itself

Final Fantasy 11 Bug Has Forced Square Enix to Kill Bosses Itself

Final Fantasy 11 is experiencing an odd bug that’s forcing Game Masters to go around slaying boss monsters in every one of the game’s servers. Temporary measures are being put in place by Final Fantasy 11‘s support team to deal with these unusual occurrences, and the culling of these powerful monsters by the game’s staff is just one part of efforts to restore proper balance to the game’s looting economy.

First released in May 2002, Final Fantasy 11 was a bold step forward for the classic RPG series, becoming the first MMORPG to bear the Final Fantasy name. Originally released in the days of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, Final Fantasy 11‘s console support was shut down in spring 2016. However, the game still has a healthy following on PC, with estimates of around 340,000 active players as of January 2026, despite its most recent new add-on content having been released more than five years ago.

What Is the Best Order to Play the Final Fantasy Series?

To experience Square Enix’s legendary mainline Final Fantasy series in optimal order, it’s best to move from classic storytelling to modern action.

Final Fantasy 11’s Boss Monsters Need to be Put Down by Game Staff

Final Fantasy 11 still has an active support staff in place, and with the recent discovery of a particular bug, Game Masters are being deployed to go into interdimensional zone Limbus and slay some of the game’s biggest and baddest monsters. A notice posted on the game’s official website points out that Notorious Monsters appear to be unexpectedly reappearing in some cases after players have defeated them, resulting in the game not properly recording whether each of these monsters has actually been defeated. The source of the unexpected problem has been identified as a “server-side data recording” error, and the support team has enacted measures that should prevent it from happening again. However, as part of the team’s efforts to clear up newly emerging issues with some Final Fantasy 11 features, support team members are personally undergoing a killing spree of all the Notorious Monsters in the game.

The main problem that leaving the Notorious Monsters alone would cause, the official notice states, is that with the data recording error, players may not be able to receive credit for the monsters they have successfully slain. Hunting Notorious Monsters is a particularly good way to rack up rare and powerful Final Fantasy equipment, and the support staff cannot guarantee that players have a fair shot at the appropriated treasure coffers during the game’s next play period unless every single Notorious Monster is verifiably eliminated. For that reason, following the culling of these monsters by staff, every Notorious Monster will be counted as having been defeated on each of the game’s worlds.

The timetable for Game Masters’ slaying of these Final Fantasy monsters is set to begin on January 29 at 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PT, and it is planned to last for approximately 14 hours. During this time period, game staff will be visiting each world, or server, in a pre-determined sequence and personally defeating each Notorious Monster. The staff has apologized for the inconvenience and has asked anyone wanting to challenge a Notorious Monster during the current play period to do so before this culling action goes into effect.

Despite the recent challenges, the original Final Fantasy MMO is still performing surprisingly strongly with fans more than two full decades after its initial launch. Over the summer, Final Fantasy 11‘s staff had to pause character creation on the Asura server due to high congestion, which was resulting in some unexpected behavior in the game’s functions. Though its initial framework is aging, the game’s popularity and the continued work of the support staff seem to be keeping it running well, even if some unconventional tactics like slaying every boss monster in the game have to be enacted.
